Well, you're shy of missing the grand opening of Amoeba Hollywood by a
few weeks (assuming things are still going according to plan). There's
Aron's records... but it pales in comparison to either Rasputin's or
Amoeba.
Better yet, if you want IDM vinyl, hit up the smaller stores with preview
stations. WAX on melrose is decent. So is Vinyl Fetish on Vermont Ave.
in Los Feliz..(far more dance oriented than the Vinyl Fetish on Melrose)
I've never been there but Groovemerchant(?) in Van Nuys is good from what
I heard.
It's a bit of a drive south (around 40 minutes), but NoiseNoiseNoise
records in Costa Mesa, CA is prime. Higher Source in Huntington Beach
(right next to Costa Mesa) doesn't have a bad experimental section either.
(though higher Source is almost purely a vinyl store)
As much as I appreciate the expansive, eclectic selections at Amoeba, I
fear what they'll do to all the smaller local underground stores in
southern California. I fear the effects will be more negative than Best
Buy. With a few exceptions (Aquarius and Mod Lang for example), Amoeba
has become the de facto store to shop at in the Bay Area... which I think
is sad, because you just can't walk in to a quiet environment and be able
to chat music with the owners and workers, and be educated. You're just
milled around a huge line with employees that try as fast as possible to
get you the fuck out of the store, to accomodate the other 200 people
entering the store that second.
