Last batch for today... . Initial Release comp 2xcd (Surgery) As the name suggests, the compilation is the first release of the new Surgery out of Australia and it features two cds packed with fresh electronica sounds from new and familiar names. Tracks from semi-established producers like CiM, Plod, Boulderdash, Jet Jaguar, Aspen, Fizzarum, Lackluster, MD, Bauri, Novel 23, and Unagi Patrol mix with tracks from lesser-known producers including Mr. Projectile, Sleepy, Vim!, and Pretty Boy Crossover all of which delivering entertainingly melodic earcandy. Almost every single track on this is a winner but a few of my many favorite parts of this release include Mr Projectile's 'flying sounds,' Plod's 'boyta,' k-rad's '149idn,' and vim!'s thin strips of you. I think i was surprised most on this compilation by the quality fo the tracks from the newer producers mentioned above. Another nice surprise was the cdrom extras & mp3 included with this release. Kudos to Surgery Records for such a plesent release. Now it's time to find out more about the impressive lineup of newer producers on this compilation. Do artist like Mr Projectile, Vim!, Sleepy, PBXO, and K-rad have any releases out worth tracking down? More info please... . Dan Abrams: stream cd (Mille Plateaux) Wow, wow, wow! Dan Abrams, aka Shuttle358, delivers a stunning 13-track cd for Mille Plateaux called 'Stream.' If you've heard either of the two Shuttle358 releases then you have taste of the warmth, minimalism, and subtle percussive movements that 'Stream' delivers. But 'Stream' adds to that previous sound a bit by introducing several tracks featuring a rhythmic click-techno framework like a more adventuresome SND sound with a little more atmospheric warmth in the background. 'Stream' is a brilliant album for fans of SND, Shuttle358, and Dettinger. Easily one of the top releases of 2001 so far. Highly recommended. . Gez Varley: bayou paradis cd (Force Inc) Veteran techno producer and onetime LFO member, gez varley, follows up his excellent 'Beautiful' album that came out on the I-220 label last year with a new full-length of deep and minimal techno. The tempo of the ten tracks on 'Bayou Paradis' is a consistent driving 4x4 but each track is fleshed out with either deep melodic chords, dubbed-out effects, or a combination of both. Tracks like 'Les Cartes' and 'Soul Gate' with their swirling dubbed-out chords and muted percussion typify the appeal of this release. In my opinion, when it comes to quality 4x4 techno, Gez Varley is just as solid a producer as detroit legend Jeff Mills and 'Bayou Paradis' is another impressively solid album from this always-consistent producer. . Harald "Sack" Zeigler & E*Rock: mind as master 3" cd (Audio Dregs) My only other experience with the Audio Dregs label is with their fantastic E*Vax releases so before i even listened to this release i was expecting something in that sonic neighborhood but upon first listen i was confronted with a sound that would be more at home on the A-Musik, Gargarin, or Gefriem labels instead. 'Mind As Master' takes a page right out of the recepie book that Felix Kubin has been using for the past few years - mix playful melodies from vintage instruments, a smattering of light percussion, and add some odd looped vocal bits. Cut into 5 pieces and serve on a 3" cdep. An amusing release once i got past my misplaced expectations and one that fans of Felix Kubin, A-Musik, Gargarin, etc should enjoy. . Vote Robot: h.waiian blue 7" (Tonschacht) Canadian duo Vote Robot with a great 2-track 7" for the german Tonschacht label. The first track, 'h.waiian blue,' is short warm piece that features intermittent waves of melodic textures with occasional gurgling melodies on top somehow giving this track a polyponesian flavor. The b-side track, 'm.si.ppi grey,' is about double the length of the a-side and has a colder feel to it. It too features intermittent waves of melodic textures, though with a gritty edge, with occasional gurgling melodies bordering on noise bursts. Overall this ep is a nice ep of ambient glitch & textural sounds, athough at less than 7 minutes in length I don't know if it's worth the import cost. Go for their new Kraak3 label album instead.
