Hey, all. Did anyone see last night's Chicago Autechre show? Unfortunately, we were so tired by the time Russell Haswell finished playing (over 2 hours), we only stayed for about a half hour of Autechre. They were pretty good though. I got kind of pissed that Russell Haswell played that long, Once I realized he was actually DJ'ing, I was a little more impressed with what he was doing. I like the multiple-song/noisy, dirty evil-sounding hard techno stuff. I haven't heard anything that hard and dirty-sounding in awhile. Any idea what he was playing along those lines? Otherwise, if somebody's got a tape/disc of one of his DJ sets, or more of the techno stuff (I can't really get too much into the complete noise parts, but like some of it mixed in), please let me know. Does he have any releases which aren't just all noise? Thanks. rob

Actually, Rob Hall does the techno stuff. He played a lot here tonight in minneapolis, which i thought was kind of boring. the hipsters in the audience seemed to dig it though, probably because i'm sure most of them could've gived fuck-all about autechre's music (more interested in the fact it was "obscure and difficult", evident that they left when it actually *became* obscure and difficult). Speaking of obscure and difficult, it was pretty funny to see that when Haswell came back on after Hall's 1.5 hour [boring] techno set, the croud dug most of it, mainly because it was so varied, but then were all scared off by Autechre. Going from 4/floor based housey techno to autechre will do that, I suppose. Oh, and they have t-shirts now. it sounded like stuff akin to the "mcr quarter" song that's tacked on to the japanese "confield." good stuff, but doesn't have the same appeal played loudly in small venues. hall sounded raver-friendly, or at least hipster friendly. haswell sounded evil all of it sounded a little fuzzy and distorted (why do *all* live shows have the volume so amazingly loud?). to continue on with brash generalizations, my head was boppin and toes tappin' almost all night (even through ae), which is more than 97% of the audience, but... what is up with that spasmy "dance" thing? is this a drug based response to loud music? it certainly didn't have anything to do with rhythm... cheers, /derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- now updated daily --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
