Virtual Turntables works pretty well for me... can't remember the website for it, but there's a link from my website (www.bovaflux.co.uk). Just started playing around with the Traktor demo too.... this is *really* good! Can do loads of fancy extra stuff, like setting loops dead easily, reversing the track, grabbing the track and scratching with it....Better than real vinyl?? (in all my time here I've never started on of those ultra annoying threads like vinyl vs cd and stuff so let's hope you all go crazy about this comment :)

Unless your soundcards headphone and line out come up as two independent sound devices, then you're not going to get different sounds out of them.... Just stick a cheap £20 soundblaster 16 in or something. (assuming your using a pc, btw). If your using a laptop, like me, its a bit more expensive.... I resorted to using a WaMi Box, which is a pcmcia soundcard/synth/midi thing....expensive but good... Couldn't really use my laptop for music without it.

Does anyone know of good mp3 DJ software? I am looking for something that allows playing two tracks at once, with ability to monitor one or both through the heaphone port, and play the actual mix through the line out port. You wouldnt think that it would be a big ask, but all the software I have seen so far requires two soundcards. They are also primarily concerned with beatmatching, which is obviously of next to no use to me. I have a sound blaster live! card and line out to the aux ports on my stereo system. The best I've been able to do so far is two winamps with different playlists and no monitoring ability, which is very annoying. Any suggestions would be appreciated. P.S. As soon as the 'movies' thread ended, the 'aphex=sell out' one started. And I joined the list right in the middle of everyone complaining about Confield. I've got to ask - does it end?

there once were something called "the virtual turntables" which worked the way you describe. i've been looking for a version of that one or something similar for a while as well, but i haven't found anything. if you or someone else finds anything, let me know, like you said, it's not that much to ask from a software cheers franz --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hi, I just joined the list...I'm a laptop DJ/producer in Hong Kong, I have a group here called Digital Cutup Lounge...we tend to play a lot of so-called 'IDM' in our DJ sets. We also do a lot of improv gigs with live musicians here, got mp3 and RealAudio streams on our website (see URL below)...have a laptop DJ vs jazz improv CD coming out next month as well.

The best programs we've seen are Atomixmp3 <http://www.atomixmp3.com> and Traktor <http://www.native-instruments.de>. Virtual Turntables is also OK, but Atomix seems to be more stable, I have *never* had it crash on me at a gig, and we gig a lot. All of these run only on PC, though a Mac version of Traktor is due out later this year. Atomix has got a headphone split mode that may do something like you're looking for, but I'm not quite sure as my hardware is different than yours. Download the demo and check it out. My partner and I each use two soundcards ourselves. Actually not soundcards but those Roland USB audio interfaces, you can plug two of them into a laptop and get very high-quality sound coming out of two stereo channels. Then it's a lot better to plug into a real DJ mixer for hands-on control, there's only so much mixing you can do with one finger on a PC screen. Another point -- use 320K mp3 or wav files if you are serious about sound, even 192K still sounds pretty scratchy to me most of the time. The best online archive of DJ software I've seen is on the MP3 Machine site <http://www.mp3machine.com>, maybe you can find what you're looking for there.
