Hi, I just joined the list...I'm a laptop DJ/producer in Hong Kong, I have a group here called Digital Cutup Lounge...we tend to play a lot of so-called 'IDM' in our DJ sets. We also do a lot of improv gigs with live musicians here, got mp3 and RealAudio streams on our website (see URL below)...have a laptop DJ vs jazz improv CD coming out next month as well.

You wouldnt think that it would be a big ask, but all the software I have seen so far requires two soundcards. They are also primarily concerned with beatmatching, which is obviously of next to no use to me.
The best programs we've seen are Atomixmp3 <
http://www.atomixmp3.com> and Traktor <
http://www.native-instruments.de>. Virtual Turntables is also OK, but Atomix seems to be more stable, I have *never* had it crash on me at a gig, and we gig a lot.
All of these run only on PC, though a Mac version of Traktor is due out later this year.
Atomix has got a headphone split mode that may do something like you're looking for, but I'm not quite sure as my hardware is different than yours. Download the demo and check it out. My partner and I each use two soundcards ourselves. Actually not soundcards but those Roland USB audio interfaces, you can plug two of them into a laptop and get very high-quality sound coming out of two
stereo channels. Then it's a lot better to plug into a real DJ mixer for hands-on control, there's only so much mixing you can do with one finger on a PC screen.
Another point -- use 320K mp3 or wav files if you are serious about sound, even 192K still sounds pretty scratchy to me most of the time.
The best online archive of DJ software I've seen is on the MP3 Machine site <
http://www.mp3machine.com>, maybe you can find what you're looking for there.
