It means he wasn't interested in what he was hearing. I personally didn't notice too many people acting overly intelligent- certainly not enough to scare David Byrne away. He's one of the original rock n' roll philosphers. Also, maybe he didn't leave the building, he just wanted to get away from you... I'm just KIDDING! I definitely think music appreciation has to do with "being in the moment". I don't think whether or not Autechre makes sense to you is about intelligence. Like I said before- some people hear it, some people don't- and even whether or not you can hear them in an ordered way, can vary from show to show. The question then might be, does intelligence very from moment to moment? We all definitely have moments of lucidity, versus moments of being confused and overwhelmed. Maybe there can be an argument constructed linking music appreciation to intelligence, but that would seem to be a very elitist and subjective argument. I personally like to call IDM "InsteaD of Music" ;) -----Original Message----- From: Brian flanagan [mailto:studiomoo@madasafish.com] Sent: Monday, May 07, 2001 3:36 PM To: IDM List Subject: Re: [idm] Autechre at Bowery Ballroom -----Original Message----- From: activity@activaire <activity@activaire.com> To: IDM List <idm@hyperreal.org> Date: 07 May 2001 23:20 Subject: RE: [idm] Autechre at Bowery Ballroom

I definately think a person musical preferences reflects his intelligence in some noticeable degree. NOW LISTEN CAREFULLY: I'm not saying people who "listen" to rap, country, or mtv shite are "stupid" per se, I'm just saying you wouldn't catch Beethoven, or Einstein or Hemmingway or Joyce or Paul Klee doing that. I think intelligent people try to be as informed/knowledgeable as possible and try to find something of worth in everything. And your argument might not work as well as you think if your list included some contemporary intellectuals who actually had a chance to appraise the intellectual worth of rap, MTV shite or country. Aargghh! If that is actually true, I'll be forced to completely reevaluate my opinion of Mr. von Trier... g. -- Guillaume Grenier - gollum@videotron.ca in space there is no north in space there is no south in space there is no east in space there is no west --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I don't think anyones level of intellegence is determinable by the kind of music they listen to. Some of the smartest people I know listen to pretty shitty music to begin. On the flip side of that, I know some dumb ass people who listen to some pretty intellegent music. Music can be a simple or complicated thing and depending on why you listen to it determines what you will like. I like groups like FSOL, for the atmoshphere their music creates, I like Aphex Twin for the creative "fun" he brings to music. I like autechre for the textural design of their music. I also like Korn, even though there is nothing intellectual about their music at all. There is an emotional outlet in their sound that I can appreciate. I also like Busta Rhymes because he makes rap less gang related. He brings a lot of humor into, and he is really good at what he does. Of course, there is Run DMC, how could you not like Run DMC? Anyway, I can't say that I like country, but I love Johnny Cash, he is my punk idol for doing whatever the hell he wanted cause that was what he wanted, not to be a punk, but just because that is what he wanted. Anyway, I will stop right here cause I could go on and on, and I know some people on this list don't like the things others have to say anyway. on 5/8/01 9:50 AM, Roman Sturm Aon at newtype@aon.at wrote:
