True, they definitely have some autechre back there (along with that horrible Nancy Reagan of a fascistic menace, RDJ-- although their bouncing ball, or bouncing hammer on a dulcimer, is friendlier than his), but I'd hate to see autechre be the sole reference point for a description. They are NOT by any means another autechre sound-a-like like Geiom, Syndrone, Fizzarum, etc...(although I like those three just fine, on occasion). The level of orchestration of different sounds/sections and seemingly live instrumentation (not sure), plus the Julie-Cruise-style vox on the one track and general childlike warmth all-around, place them in a slightly different category, somewhere between IDM and vaguely twee instrumental indie-pop-- adding in as well some of the same cinematic feel that Broadcast can occasionally get. Dig, I really, really like this band. I think I described it to a friend once as "psychedelia for small children", although the darker, melancholy undertones might be overwhelming for the tiniest of tots. Of course, you'd think Forbidden Planet or The Black Hole would be that way too, and I liked both of those when I was five. Anybody else remember being a little overawed/ disturbed by the flaming, psychotropic Hell sequence inside the hole? Oh, and watch out that m?m don't get mistaken for the Austrian Mum on Klein-- not a terrible piece of funk, but a much different bite of the enchilada, no? Best, M.
