Some quick reviews of stuff I got last week. By the way, I'm never wrong.
I'll review the non-electronic stuff first.
My Bloody Valentine- Tremolo, Glider, Isn't Anything: After listening to
Loveless once or twice I immediately ordered the rest of MBV's available
stuff. The two eps that coincide with Loveless, Tremolo(5/5) and
Glider(5/5), are
pretty good and worth picking up, they all carry then same drone from
Loveless and are really great. I don't much care for Isn't
Anything(3/5), for
me its just a shadow or intimation of Loveless. I've never liked straight
up rock since I heard Aphex. Probably a good cd though, I dunno, I can't
be bothered to listen to the whole thing.
Bjork - Homogenic: okay, but boring 2.5/5
Beach Boys - Greatest Hits Volume 2: great, but not as good as 1st
Greatest Hits. Heroes and Villains, Break Away, and a bunch of others are
paradigms of good songwriting. WHY IS IT STILL ALL IN MONO?!?!?! 4.5/5
Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground: okay, but boring 2.5/5
Now on to the electronic stuff:
Chris Clark - Clarence Park: We may have lost Aphex, but his legacy lives
on. This is a good cd, and it being Clark's debut is made great, because
we can look forward to more good stuff from him. Nice short attention
span electronica that could fit in with Aphex stuff. Check it out. 3.5/5
Cylob - Cylobian Sunset: If you like the more chill early Aphex, like the
later half of I Care... or the quieter tracks on Caustic and Poly you
should definately pick this up. 4/5
Fennesz - Hotel Parallel: Nice ambient(I guess) cd, glitchy kind of
stuff, I don't really know what to say about this cd. I guess if you like
Zammuto or Pole you should pick it up. 3.5/5
Jake Mandell - Love Songs for Machines: Not as good as I was expecting,
but still pretty damn good.
Most of the songs kind of sound the same, but thats not necessarily bad. Quality
production. If the title strikes your fancy you should pick it up.
Listen to it while playing Super Mario or something. 3.5/5
Porter Ricks - Biokinetics: This is a really good cd, sounds like a train
travelling underwater which is cool, but its techno and I don't like
techno. 3.5/5
Wagon Christ - Tally Ho: Kitchy fun, not as good as his Plug stuff which
is great, but its nice chill music. If you like kitchy fun or Plug check
it out. 4/5(because its fun), jeez, I used k*tch* twice in the same
paragraph
AUTECHRE - CONFIELD: The big one. I like it. I give it 5/5 but for a
kind of strange reason which is: It gets better with each listen without
fail. I'm a big ae fan and I'm not disappointed, in fact I'm relieved
because its not more Peel Session 2 stuff. If you didn't like EP7 you
should prolly just keep chewing on your binkey and wait for the new plaid
who can be counted on to serve up some more of the same, more of what
you're used to. 5/5
I've heard the new Squarepusher lp, and
HOORAY
hooray for what?
HOORAY FOR POKEY, I mean, hooray for the new Squarepusher
Looking forward to buying Go Plastic, the "new" Zammuto, the new Marumari,
the new BoC, and the bootleg of Autechre brushing their teeth. I'm not
looking forward to plaid fans gushing about the new repress of the old
plaid with a new title.
As always, buy Phonem's Hydro Electric for a day at the beah, and for
christ's sake if you haven't already pick up My Bloody Valentine's
Loveless.
