AE at the Bowery Ballroom Friday: I had never seen them before so I've been looking forward to this for a long time. Didn't expect particularly amazing show (visually, there was nothing really) but I could just close my eyes and listen. Yeah they are a force, individual, and true to themselves. I was curious how they did what they did. Every bar of the Rhythm changed slightly from the previous one and I was speculating whether this was done live or not and if so, how? I thought of a way to do it with a certain type of drum machine and "step sequencing" however some of the stuff seemed more complex than likely with that ... Changing the length of a measure or "beat" on the fly ... could be done with a sampler. But the two methods may not be able to work together so fluidly. No problem in a studio where you can edit the audio/midi but try doing that in almost real time. My friend Alex was sure it [the rhythm/backing track] was pre-recorded. Anyway despite my dissection of it, I enjoyed the show. Would've been better with room to dance ... -Atom -- electronic.music.MELANGE.electronic.music.electronic. ----> http://www.melange.org <------ .media/scoring/art/design http://www.andr0id.com "Look for beauty where it is not supposed to be found." -Claes Oldenburg --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Actually, I believe the nord modular that other people have noted spotting during the shows is the main source of percussion for their live show. I know it's all over their recent releases, but slight variations are surprisingly easy to program into percussion patches using the modular, what with random pulses, noise, and self-modulation workin' on tiny parts of the percussion. This came up on the nord modular lists, where it was noted that using the thing solely for percussion is "weird"... sounds like a good use to me :D It could also explain why there wasn't a ton of variation (adding/subtracting modules causes the DSP to be recalculated, creating a pause) and why the tracks were separated out (loading up different patches also recalculates the DSP). Plus when they're playing pre-recorded stuff, they call it a "dj show" :D I think this was noted earlier on the list too, where they had laptops and it looked like they were doing non-dj stuff live for a "dj show," but it was just based on pre-recorded stuff, so they called it dj'ing I'm anxious to see them here in Minneapolis - the venue seems sold out but there's tons of "extra" space to chill/hang. cheers, /derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- now updated daily --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
