Jake Mandell - Love Songs For Machines (carpark) Did I miss people talking about this record? Why haven't I read any mention of it here; this is the best record i've bought all year. Beautiful melodies and sounds aranged in not-quite-four-on the floor techno with some rather complex yet accesible rythm patterns and nice evolutions within tracks. Slight new-wave edge at times, and a couple nods to kraftwerk (always a good thing). Seriously, this is essential, at least IMHO. kid606 - soccergirl ep this is quite nice, sounds like the kid was making an attempt at boards of canada / steve reich style stuff, but with his own spin on it. a little fuzzed out in a unique way, with nice melodies with odd time sigs or timings. nice song titles, if you generally like his song titles (i do). Not necessarily gonna convince the haters, but it's definitely on a different tip than most of his work. various artists - Clicks And Cuts 2 3 discs! 36 artists! and yet almost all of this could have been by one person, in that the tracks all work fairly well together and very few lay outside the parameters that the majority of the tracks reside in. From ambient clicks and tones to full blown "click house", there's a pleasing mix of "intellectual" and "accessible" tracks here. Obviously I haven't fully absorbed this material yet, but it's mostly quite good. The matmos track stuck out a little as actually sounding like matmos, while, say, the kid606 track sounds pretty much like the other tracks on the house side of things. Recommended. it was $20 at other music, which strikes me as a pretty good deal. Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album Well, duh. But I've been listening to this album for years now, and i heard something NEW on it this week. About 20 seconds into "Girl-Boy (?18 Snare Rush Mix)" there is a loop in the background that i've never heard before. Weird, it's right there, but it's just registered on my consciousness. This album is still brilliant and very enjoyable and is a major inspiration to me. ("...well if RDJ could do this stuff in 95/96 I should be able to do what i want now." haha) part two coming later... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Alright- so my "entertainment poll" freaked everyone out- those are just cheesy questions I thought of off the top of my head- but I asked them because I'm trying to get people to come out to our night in Brooklyn. Adesh and I bust our asses to try to get people to come out, and there are about 10 people who come out regularly- but since this is NYC, it seems like there should be more people coming out. Apart from some of the paranoid sarcastic answers- it's nice to know that Mondays are not such a horrible night to try to play records to the public. I'm listening to the Funckarma track Lolala, and I've been playing with the Matmos rhinoplasty vinyl, and I can't get over Alphatronic [Inzec 008]. You should also know that we are neurotic Dj's in that we never play a track twice. If you come to Record Camp, you will not hear the "Best of IDM Top 20". Come on out sometime- this is entertainment, not organized religion. Just listened to it in my car again. It is brilliant and essential. Soft yet beaty, tender and joyful. All those into melody techno should look into it. While I think its a decent release, I think he has better including his albums on Worm Interface(an absolute classic), Quandom Current, and the Football shaped Ep on carpark. Yep. Got all of them lately and dig every one of them! How come I have been missing his stuff for so long? His dark ambient "Underling" from his own Kodama label is brilliant as well. Alien np. Crunch "1" (Music Aus Strom) - this is indeed the best from MaS!

I have to agree with Rob on this one. I think Jake Mandell's earlier works are far superior to his most recent album. I actually posted a particularly harsh review of it to this list a month or two back. But releases like Quandon Current, Parallel Processes, and his Kodama label releases are top-shelf. Up till this album, I'd never been much of a fan of Mandell, but this album is by far and away his best, and as of yet, my favorite idm record of the year (but the year is still young). Konstantin Minko wrote:
