I, too love MBV - I'd say that besides Loveless, the "You Made Me Realise" single is my second favorite thing by them. It's far more song-oriented, but really great. You can probably download it from that expect-delay site.... "Slow" is probably the most idm-ish off that ep, but all the songs are wonderful. As far as other shoegazer stuff goes, does anyone know when Seefeel's "Quique" and "Polyfusia" cds went out of print? I can't find them anywhere, now that I want them. Anyone want to get rid of their copy? Also, has anyone heard of the band "All Natural Lemon and Lime Flavors"? Some people who like MBV recommended them over on the Giant Robot magazine message boards, but I'd love to hear what you all think before I go pick their stuff up. I think Honey Power EP was one of their finest moments, I remember hearing it on the John Peel show, and Peel saying something like "it sounds like a fourth generation cassette copy I know, but thats the way its supposed to sound" "to here knows when" - I've always admired for its sheer noisey weirdness, sounds like kevin kept twisting the pitch knob on the tape recorder or putting his finger on the reel to reel.... Seefeel never really lived up to MBV in my books, but had their moments -i --- clerc2@pe.net wrote:

I think Air's Moon Safari is a pretty sublime cd, the track with the trumpet is particularly nice, but I think its a bit of a stretch from MBV. I know Kevin Shields worked with Primal Scream some, is there Screamadelica in the same vein as MBV's Loveless masterpiece? On Wed, 18 Apr 2001, Josh Bown wrote:

In a word : "NO". I mean, very definitely not to my ears. Screamadelica is BRILLIANT, but it's in a completely separate area of the cauldron to Loveless. However, you might want to try Disjecta's Clean Pit & Lid for grainy texturised washes of soundscape. Yes, Disjecta's Clean Pit & Lid is fantastic. I think it's the album that has better assimilated SAW2 lessons by Aphex Twin (SAW2 dates back to 1994 and CP&L came out in 1996). Similar haunted places, arid feelings, and sometimes the silence at it's best. And for that matter, most bookmarks in electronica during the last 10 years or so, been made by musicians with still an open eye for guitar. Or they have a history which gave them these basics. Just have a listen to Fennesz, Köhn, Pimmon, Alog, Dat Politics or even Noto and you'll hear a diffrence in energy. Problem is that lots of people in "arts" started to pick it up and placed them on a statue which is sometimes a pitty. I'm very glad to see labels such as Mjall and Komplott moving away from pure electronica to something wich is closer to "contemporary music". i think this evolution will go on and happilly so. it's time music gets some fresh inputs and then the industry can kill it gain by putting too much pressure on young shoulders (remember Insides/Earwig, Bark Psychosis, Disco Inferno???) Mbv had their importance, and "loveless" was indeed great but having seen them twice (once during "feed me" period, and once during "loveless" period) i can't help the feeling i had back then which was excitement during their first period (which for me only started after "You made..") and "a ok-gig" during the second passage. The myth just started to grow afterwards. Sometimes it makes me think about Joy Division which were basicaly very groovy (in my mind) but lots of the music of them got lost because everyone was too busy exploring lyrics etc...

Use of guitar sounds and a kind of pillowy ambience that coats their music. For fans of MBV, I recommend the Portugese musician Rafael Toral (whose _Wave Field_ sports Loveless-inspired cover art)- great acousmatic guitar drones which accumulate to a frothy buzz. Check out Sound Mind Sound Body or Aeriola Frequency. There's also an e.p. length CD on Tom which contains outtakes from _Aeriola_, but I haven't heard it. It doesn't actually sound much like MBV, but it comes from a similar place. It's kind of interesting that Seefeel is mentioned- their best stuff, while not under-rated per se, draws far less breath on this list as I would think. The early Too Pure singles are genius, as are their latter day Warp/Rephlex output (in particular Starethrough and Succour/CH-VOX). Disjecta are ok, but I find something unsettlingly brittle and jarring about their records. -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

fennesz has "loveless on his all-time top 10 records list- i saw that on forcefield zine (i think) once. beyond that i don't really see a clear comparison. they both use (used?) guitars. also on that list were "pet sounds" and "every merzbow concert" so there you go.
