ok, interesting anecdote (and yes, there's a point to all this - read on...) when i was twenty i lived abroad for a year in the uk. got bored in the spring and booked a ticket for the closest, cheapest most out-there travel destination i could find - turkey. spent three weeks traveling around central turkey and along the mediterreanean with a friend. the farthest east we got was a region called cappadocia. crazy rock formations everywhere, this white volcanic rock sandstone material called tufa that erodes slowly over time. they had entire villages carved into the stone, ancient underground cities hundreds of feet under the earth with complex systems of tunnels, ventilation shafts and wells. we stayed a couple nights in this town called goreme, rented motorbikes one day to check out the countryside. a few bucks a day plus gas and we were off tooling around the middle of nowhere. the old man who rented us the bikes gave us a map and pointed out a couple landmarks in broken english. he kept repeating one name over and over though - uchisar, uchisar. i asked him what that meant in english and he told me "white castle" - and that we should make sure we were there for sunset. after sputtering around on the bikes for a few hours, the sun started to get low in the sky and we headed in the direction of uchisar on the advice of our turkish friend. i was driving the bike with my friend on the back, rode over the crest of a hill to see this amazing panorama unfold before us. smooth white curves of rock illuminated by the setting sun, an unbelievable view. all the more unbelievable when i realized that i'd actually *been here before*, that i'd seen this place - on the cover of autechre's "amber" album... after i almost careened off the road in shock, we stopped to take in the sunset view and shoot some photos, one of which i have on my wall today. so, if you ever wind up in central turkey - look for a gnarly old turkish guy who rents motorbikes for cheap and have him draw you a map. it's a pretty amazing sight :) all for now - brock ===== Brock Phillips Motormouthmedia 2525 Hyperion Ave. #1 Los Angeles, CA 90027 fon 323.662.3865 fax 323.662.3844 email bmotor@pacbell.net __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? cool- I was always curious about that place- we used to have arguments about the scale of the phot- because it looks like it could be very small in scale- perhaps only a few inches, or it could be 100 feet as well. Good story, Brock! Mine is the opposite - I spotted Amber in my local record shop, and immediately the cover jumped out at me because I'd just returned from Cappadoccia. I'd never heard of Autechre, but gambled, based on the cover. That was one of the first electronic-music records I'd ever bought, in fact. Who knows, without that trip to Turkey, I might still be a jaded indie rocker. ;) Philip --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
