Well I'm going to stick up for both Orbital and Plaid. Orbital do what they do well.
It may not be using the the latest plug-ins to make their their MAX MSP noodlings
echo in 7/8 time, but they know how to put together a song that is dancy and a can
keep it interesting for more than a few minutes. That and they were a major influence
on the first band I was in.
Plaid's stuff is really great and there is a ton of diversity within the tracks. They pull in
influences from all over the place(techno, latin, jazz, hip-hop,classical) and don't just rely
on the studio gimmics to get their ideas across. They have interesting syncopations,
melodics and no cliched beats. On top of it all, they put on a top notch live show.
I unfortunately think that alot of IDM is throwing the baby away with the bath water
,so to speak, in its attempts to master and manipulate new technology. I like melody,
I like tracks that have basslines(something lacking in a lot of tracks lately), I like some
movement. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I'm against progress because I'm not.
The music that excites me the most these days are tracks that blend the new tech
with the more traditional songwriting elements.
