just my humble opinion...lumping Plaid with Orbital...ouch. That's just not right. And I even dig Orbital. To my ears Plaid is very original. Who else sounds like them? Hearing a track by them, within seconds you can tell it's them. I wish I could say the same thing about armada of Ae type artists out there... Ed and Andy's songwriting ability/musicality blows me away continually. While I make music and think I could mimick Orbital's catchy but simplistic synth lines (of course the success of that remains to be seen, I am NOT saying I am as good as Orbital), the melodic structures, arpeggio type stuff, and choice of synth sounds (which are smart to me because they prove you can use what sound like semi-presets and still tell a great story) inspire me. Plus the whole 'sense of humor' element in there music is much appreciated. Also note I have no formal music training, so perhaps that is why Plaid seems to strike a chord with me moreso than all the skittery beat melancholy melody stuff out there... just my .02 nate On Wed, 11 Apr 2001, Josh Bown wrote:

Well I'm going to stick up for both Orbital and Plaid. Orbital do what they do well. It may not be using the the latest plug-ins to make their their MAX MSP noodlings echo in 7/8 time, but they know how to put together a song that is dancy and a can keep it interesting for more than a few minutes. That and they were a major influence on the first band I was in. Plaid's stuff is really great and there is a ton of diversity within the tracks. They pull in influences from all over the place(techno, latin, jazz, hip-hop,classical) and don't just rely on the studio gimmics to get their ideas across. They have interesting syncopations, melodics and no cliched beats. On top of it all, they put on a top notch live show. I unfortunately think that alot of IDM is throwing the baby away with the bath water ,so to speak, in its attempts to master and manipulate new technology. I like melody, I like tracks that have basslines(something lacking in a lot of tracks lately), I like some movement. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I'm against progress because I'm not. The music that excites me the most these days are tracks that blend the new tech with the more traditional songwriting elements. If it has to be synthy to qualify as IDM, I would be up for hearing just a simple juno 106 or even a casio played by a talented musical genius type who could express emotion and write songs... component wrote:
