Huh? Do you even know what Max/MSP does? It is a modular system that can do Rebirth + 1 million other things. More like go Reaktor!, only even then you don't get NATO... Perhaps if one can get PD running fairly stable without crashing. _________________________ Christopher Sorg Multimedia Artist/Teacher http://csorg.cjb.net csorg@enteract.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Got PD running on my system here at work using Windows 2000. Very very nice.... for something that's practically beta-freeware, surely. I haven't used it extensively (as in, left it running for hours) to know how stable or robust it really is, but it survives long enough to get some great use (i.e. render some wave files) out of it. Though I imagine it's tough to use unless you have some programming language/math/sound background in school. I just like the fact that they named an object "moses" :) (Maybe this was a hand-me-down from Max) Ultimately though, there's just no substitution for just using C/C++ to make a program to process sound for you... though something like Max or PD is a helpful to test out some mathematical ideas beforehand. ======================================================================= Brian MacDonald <brianm@kuci.org> "Capital punishment turns the state into a murderer. Yeah I know. It was just a joke - hence the LOL. People have made some really negative comments about Rebirth here in the past so I thought it would be funny to say "Go Rebirth" as it was sure to get a lot of people inflamed before realizing I was kidding. I was annoyed at the "fuck cycling 74" comment with a link to some linux-only software. The comment and the link did not go together very well. In reading further posts this afternoon it appears that the comment was more directed at something Cycling 74 *did* and not their software or chosen platform. Well, considering I've only been on this list for about a week, I wouldn't know that. I would consider intentially starting a flame war pretty much childish and at the very least a waste of my time. I thought I'd learn something new, have some interesting discussions, etc, etc. I'll be sure and avoid being bated by moronic comments in the future.

At least this is a legitimate gripe. It seems to me that all Cycling 74 does is package and resell a product that is already in the public domain, namely PD. Apparently from the link, one of their few *actual* contributions, NATO, seems to actually have been ripped off of NN. Cycling has been announcing a PC version of Max/MSP for quite some time as well (a year at least?), and pushed back their original 2nd quarter release time, so why shouldn't be a consumer be angry? They're charging a lot for product developed by other individuals and public money. Sounds pretty fishy to me, IMHO.

Well if you look at the thread a little closer you will notice that *no one* actually took the Rebirth bait. It was just an inside joke to loosen up some of the tension from the recent other threads that have turned into flame wars. Being as you've only been on the list for a week I'm sure in the coming weeks and months you will find plenty of things that will waste your time. That in it of itself is a topic that comes up on the list often as well - "Damn this list/thread/topic is a waste of time - and the name IDM is so misleading". I would highly, highly recommend you heed your own advice and "be sure and avoid being bated by moronic comments in the future". This is a common list practice and stems (imo) really from the multitude of people and personalities of the many subscribers on this list throughout the world. Some people have a crude sense of humor, others are just cynics and some (who's email addy's are now in my block list) do nothing else but piss *everyone* off on this list. There are plenty of posts from people with no other purpose but to annoy others. More often than not they are inside jokes (one most recent example would be from one poster who mentioned his favorite autechre album as being Amber - this may indeed be the case but since so many people recently mentioned their dislike for the album it is blatant flame-bait. Or how about Cex's recent post about how he's just the best thing since sliced bread - if you didn't read any of his posts from the past you just wouldn't get his wry sense of humor) So, take it easy, hang in there and get from the list what it really has to offer - constant updates of what's new in the world of IDM.
