"i admit there is no excuse for hearing IDM musicians play cd's or aiff files from their computer. that is just plain laziness, there is so much more that electronic/laptop/computer musicians can do live. i just feel that computer/electronic performers need to spend just as much time developing a live set as they do making tracks in the studio or at home. i think there is a difference there. live sets should be more interactive. with more realtime performance. more surprises. more improvisation or manipulating material." Please go tell Alex Graham that to his face. Secondly, someone was talkinga bout how much sequencing sucks, which it can. I like external stuff for the fact that it sounds more "human" as compred to computers. I definitlly sequencer w/cubase, logic platinum, but always end up using my akai mpc2000xl. You can record each note in each track if you'd like, change the quantize, etc just like comp sequencers, but feels more like performing........ OH SHIT, better not get into this...so let me try to change the subject before all you gearless comp heads get on my case. I get around bad sequencing by laying out 1-3 steady, boring beats, which can be brought in and out. Then I put layer upon layer upon layer (usually 1-5 notes at a time) for a synth line. I find the akai easiest cause it keeps playing what you have, so you could like tracks (or sequences) 3&5 and just play those while thinking of the next step. How do you comp guys sequence so precisely? that's always my problem. stats p.s. U'd be amazed how 'human' a sound you can get back warping a sound on a GOOD analog synth and just slapping, rolling, or headbuttin (last one's a joke, i'm a peaceful performer) the keyboard, then quantizing it. I mean, if you're recording at 32+ quantize level, it's going to sound just like how you played it, unless you're step editing. Even when I play bass, I usually sample line by line, and compile them. It's not as 'live' but it can much much much more complex. I don'tknow, I try not to think of each complete pattern as a whole, rather randomly get a good beat and really really focus on its development.....leads much more intelligent sounding compositions. p.s.p.s. Okay, whose bring crunch subjects onto the idm list. Not that I even read them, you're probably talking about crunch beats, but please...no crunch. AND CAN I GET A MOVEMENT THAT NO PERSON CAN EMAIL THE LIST MORE THAN 2 TIMES A DAY....I get the digest and it's ridiculous
