the new Matmos is great....the spondee track produces a huge grin while making me shake my ass. what more is there? I also got a few cd-singles that are great --Teledisc Disco parts 1&2 by Junior Varsity KM and the 5-track single for "You're Fabulous" by JVkm (with two remixes by the incredible Sweet Trip) Does anyone know what's happening with Sweet Trip? any new material on the way? the Alura EP is really great... If you haven't heard it, it's something ike a more lush "The Girl with the Sun in Her Head" by Orbital. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'll definitely agree with you here-- I just picked it up myself, and there's nothing more booty-bumping around my house these days. The California Rhinoplasty EP is probably going to be the closest to what's on the new full-length, but I would check out The West if you haven't already. There just aren't other records like that one. The newest almost feels like MoM sometimes, with all that squelching funk-- not a bad thing by any means, but Matmos used to be completely out there on their own. oh my, this new matmos is certainly not what i expected! what a pleasant surprise! the new one is completely brilliant. no arguments. "spondee" was in fact what sold me for sure when i heard a pre-release promo. definitely a departure from "the west" but such an exemplary track in its combination of kitsch and funk. the whole thing is so completely balanced that it's virtually flawless. it isn't quite as original as "the west" but it does still avoid many comparisons to their past work or that of other artists. "for felix" maintains the same level of outlandish strangeness (and beauty) as most of "the west". it's funny you should mention a mouse on mars comparison because even though i see the similarities to an extent, matmos has upped the ante by sheer virtue of their sample sources, while MoM appears to have moved onto an equally interesting but newer, darker sound for themselves. (i haven't heard their new full length yet, but after the single, i can't wait!) so i guess the point of this post is to agree.... the new matmos is amazing. buy it! matt

I wouldn't necessarily compare _Cut_ with _The West_, other than the fact that they are both concept albums which come across as genre studies (and, incidentally, great as well). Well, I take that back- both of them demonstrate how Matmos can make conceptualism work for them (as opposed to being a gimmick or straitjacket- I wish that Firework Edition and Aube records had somewhere near the same success rate). Has anybody delved into the fact that the very studio trickery being used to create _Cut_ mirrors the practice of plastic surgery (who is the better doctor, the wielder of Britney Spears' scalpel or the poor sod who has to nip and tuck her vocal "nuances")? It's a nice touch that adds depth to the meaning of the album's title (or vice versa). If "For Felix" is a revelation, you should track down stuff by some of the conceptual art musicians and just plain out-there improvisors who have fashioned a post-Fluxus tradition out of similar-minded musical practices- people like the Het Apollohuis folk (Paul Panhuysen's now-defunct Dutch art space- check out the _Echo II_ compilation on their own label), Limpe Fuchs & Anima (improvisational weirdness that grew like huitlacoche off of the corn cob of free improv) or even the "cracked everyday electronics" of Voice Crack. And speaking of Fluxus, the Joe Jones CD on ? Records is baaaaadass, like a solar-powered automaton of post-AMM scrapings. -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
