I've never really understood this logic: This organization is providing you free web space, the ability to upload and download an unlimited amount of music, and they're making it so dumbed-down easy to use that it's almost painful. Of course they require advertising! Do you know how much it probably costs them to maintain and run a site of this scope? Give them a break! I'd rather see a few ads on each page rather than no site at all. In terms of your "nothing in return" comment, what do you get in return when you get traffic on your OWN home page? A few hits on a web counter probably swiped from a different free service? (Or are you going to stick ads on your own home page, which would make you no different than mp3.com?) I understand your reasoning behind wanting to host your own site with more variety, and I don't blame you one bit: you'll get more of an identity, and you'll get a lot less "dear ___ i like your stuff, download all my tracks" spam mail. Standardized page design is lame, yes. But I guess there is a trade-off in that you get less immediate traffic to your site, no referrals, etc., unless you promote it heavily yourself. I personally think it would be a good idea to have both, in which case you have twice the audience potentially. just my thoughts..... i don't work for mp3.com or hugely endorse them or whatever, if this makes it seem that way. lately it just seems like backlash for the sake of backlash. good luck with your new site :-) matt

As for this statement. I think that the musician has more power today than they every have. Think about it: 1.Anyone with a computer can now make professional quality music(given that they have the talent and ideas). Its no longer an issue of who has the most expensive toys. 2. The web has given the artist the ability to create potential exposure all over the globe. 3. The cost of cd burners and blank media are at an all time low. I remember about 5 yrs ago paying $8 a piece for blank cdrs. What are they now 60 cents ? This beats the hell out of the blank tapes demos were passed around on a few yrs back. 4. The cost of manufacturing a cd has dropped conciderably in recent yrs as well Also, I think that if we should be getting pissed at any big music orginazation right now its the RIAA who are strongarming alot of policy these days.
