shuffle358's "frame" on 12k is good, but more on the ambient side of things... pan sonic's newest release "aaltopiiri" is one of their best. if you like any of their other stuff and you like ikeda, it's similar, but more dynamics, going from droney ambience to feedback noise. also komet's "rausch" on 12k (or any bretschneider albums) have that gradually building minimal glitchy feel like ikeda's "matrix" (disc 2), like a much better version of snd.

if you have heard other microstoria, this is similar, but it does have a slightly (VERY slightly) more musical feeling about it. every once in a while you might hear the faintest hint of a tune but usually it's the same type of stuff. (sort of in the way oval's last one did that too)

I really like this disc. It consists heavily of field recordings of protests in housing projects in california. despite the politics though, it is just a really interesting usage of samples, sounds, effects and has a totally different mood than anything else on mille plateaux from this time. and every once in a while a sample starts looping in meter and suddenly everything gets funky for a few minutes.

both of the dettinger cds are worthwhile, but i would recommend "intershop" first. it's more downtempo in spots (but still distinctly german) but overall i enjoy it more. "oasis" is more looped feeling, with less variety amongst its tracks. he also has some 12" releases that are more tech-house, i think.

i got the album on tigerbeat6 after seeing them live, and i must say, they are way better live. can't really say much in favor of this one... poorly produced, kind of silly, at times just plain annoying. i did like their live set a lot, which may be partially why i'm so disappointed by this. i've heard that their other releases are better, so take that for what it's worth.

this is a decent collection of abstract ambient field recordings. not much DSP to be found, but primarily drones and tones and room tone, with environmental recordings as well.
quoted 1 line alva noto>alva noto
i have 2 noto releases. the alva noto "prototypes" disc on mille plateaux is really good. it's a lot less minimal (even though it is still minimal, just not as minimal as other work by noto) and has a much more musical quality. the "kerne" release is ultra-minimal, like the more severe work by mika vainio from panasonic. both are good, but "prototypes" is better and also a little more accessible, IMO.

"the köln konzert" made my top 20 for 2000. it's a sort of homage to the improvisational piano work of keith jarrett. these live recordings are based around upright piano (not entirely tuned either, which actually helps) and presumably tapes of sequenced electronics.

wow, you' ve heard everything i was thinking of purchasing. what, do you work in a record shop or something? thanks for the comments, i'm already about to get the pansonic, just can't figure out which format to purchase it on. i'll scratch the blectum cd and get both dettinger releases. thanks again. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
