Don't buy it if you're not interested in being disappointed. In comparison to Millions Now Living... and TNT, it's not so great. Granted, there are a few hot tracks on it, but the majority of it is rather uninteresting, IMHO. It's been a long while since TNT, and it appears that they really haven't made much progress, musically. ... The last thing I've heard from any of the Tortoisers which I really liked was the 'Reach The Rock' soundtrack, which was done primarily by JM, and is just wonderful. I'd say "Standards" is their least indie-rock / most prog sounding album so far, though I have to say I'm not familiar with "TNT" much at all, though I have the other ones. Sometimes (tracks 3, 6 & 7) it sounds embarrassingly close to "Abacab"-era Genesis imo. The record's got a very 70's vibe. There's also lots of synths and drum processing as well as the usual odd time signatures. Despite some of my criticisms (!?) I've listened to it quite a few times since it came out, which I guess means I like it. Actually it's a very nice listen. As far as the first Tortoise album, if you enjoy "Millions...) you'll probably like the first one. Yes, I think you should buy both. But for me "Standards" it's disappointing. There are good ideas, but the final result fails because of a "punk-like" attitude that does not fit well with the type of music they do. The first album is, therefore, much better. But remember, tortoise is always tortoise, they don't know how to make bad albums :) Cesar ----- Original Message ----- From: <JShupester@aol.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, March 06, 2001 5:45 PM Subject: [idm] tortoise standards

Don't forget the release of Tortoise with The Ex from the In The Fishtank releases. Is also very good, and in there I think the punk side really was in touch with their compositions. But in "Standards" something was missed, it is only a good album while "Millions now..." and "TNT" were masterpieces... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

It was not me that said "Standards" is Punk. It was one of the Tortoise guys ;) At least I read that in a interview, so I think is common knowledge. Concerning New Age, perhaps I will listen Tangerine Dream's "Rubykon" or Steve Roach's "The Magnificent Void", which are much better than "Standards" :D --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Oh, I dunno... I always thought Rubycon was pretty much Phaedra's equal (gotta love those Mellotron sounds). For some reason I get a big kick out of Exit too. My quality cut-off point is Live Miles. Everything post-Chris Franke stinks to high heaven (all those Korg presets and overblown sax/guitar solos just make me go cold). Except perhaps some of the retro releases, like Soundmill Navigator. -- Mark Stevens http://www.headspin.clara.net/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I agree with these recommendations, though with the caveat that Electronic Meditation is more freakout than ambient. Other contemporaneous synth chill out classics include Klaus Schulze (early-mid '70s), Manuel Gottsching/Ash Ra (although the first six Ash Ra Tempel records are awesome, the most relevant start with Inventions for Electric Guitar) & Popol Vuh's first album, Affenstunde (a pure electronic album- the synth was eventually donated to Schulze). Actually, there's also a great bootleg Popol Vuh 7" in a similar style (live @ Beat Club, I think), but I would feel bad mentioning it (oops). -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I wholeheartedly recommend the soundtrack to "Risky Business". It's hard to find (import only?) and it's got a lot of other crap on it...but the 4 or 5 tracks from T-Dream are awesome. "Love on a Real Train" was a big inspiration for Global Communication's 76:14, in fact. Beautiful. Right up there with their best stuff ever, I'd say. ---brian ------------------------ Brian W. The Future Sound of London are followers of Tangerine Dream, eg. They were pioners in the electronic music along with Kraftwerk in the seventies. However most of their music is crap after the eighties. Myself I have only one album, "Rubycon" from 1974, I think. During this period perhaps they were more krautrock than New Age (well, in the 70s New Age didn't exist at all). ----- Original Message ----- From: <JShupester@aol.com> To: <cesar.laia@netvisao.pt> Cc: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2001 8:31 PM Subject: Re: [idm] tortoise standards
