well, I'm wondering if it'll grow on me (it is carefully crafted, which can be an indication), but I'd have to say my response is similar. the thing that bugs me is the rhythmic underpinning of the whole thing strikes me as flatfooted. his stylistic proximity to Autechre and Funkstorung reminds me of how those other guys really run with the idea of hiphop syncopation, constantly playing with one's rhythmic expectations. Devine devides each beat into four and, with a clothespin, hangs a different sample on each sixteenth note, beat after beat. In his favor, I sometimes find myself in a state of fascination listening to the parade of sounds. but funky it ain't. I really liked his Lily of the Valley track. listening to it again, I see that it has some of the same problems as the newer (?) work, but it has the virtue of surprise on the level of song structure -- it morphs from one sort of song to another, a particularly effective bit being the stuff that sounds like ring modulated string orchestra sounds. kurt

i thought the album was great at first, now i'm a bit bored. still like it but not as much as for example his schematic ep which is totally amazing, great contrast between the very harsh and heavy beats and the beautiful harmony and melody.i think that's the trick. the contrast. the same applies for autechres keynell. brilliant. /f --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Not much time to write now, but I wanted to add a quick vote of support to Kurt Hoffman et al re Richard Devine's album. Kurt expressed it perfectly - it's as unfunky as fuck, everything's divided into four and plonk plonk plonk. Not much in the way of syncopation, thrown rhythms, and suprisingly it seems not much care taken with volume and expressive effects on different rhythmic elements - a bit of flange, and a bit of changing EQs does a brilliant job along with different dB levels to make rhythms more interesting. With the Devine stuff it's massively monotonous to my ears, and so for all the detail it actually sounds altogether rather unsubtle! I was very disappointed in this release, although the ambient tracks are really gorgeous. I also agree about the Lily of the Valley track, although I find it rather lovely because of the structure and the melodic-ness... Can't wait to hear the reissue of the Schematic EP - embarrassed not to have picked it up before.
