Oh my goodness; Mouse on Mars have gone.... industrial two-step garage? At least, that's a first impression from upon sliding in "Actionist Respoke," the first track on the new ep. Imagine Aphex Twin's "Windowlicker" crossed with Wookie's fractured breaks and hoover-bass, processed through Richard Devine's caustic granularity. Sounds farfetched, I know, but I'm not kidding. Really. And after catching my breath, I'm astonished to note that it's actually pretty damned fun - this just might be the summer anthem for backseat subwoofers. i will second this... my first reaction to this disc was "woah!" very different indeed. i heard mouse on mars was going to explore vocals with their new material and was dreading what could have been potentially really awful results, but this was a breath of fresh air. it not only is a fairly interesting use of vocal samples, but it's so distorted and both dark and fun at the same time that it's one of their most entertaining and heavy recordings yet. i am really interesting in the following full-length now....

In fact, I received a promo of "Idiology," the full-length, today, and so far I'm completely blown away. Really, it's unlike anything they've done before. And while "Actionist Respoke" opens the disc, it quickly veers away into much deeper, stranger, and more breathtaking territory. I only listened through the first 5 tracks, in fact, before I pulled out - I couldn't absorb any more than that on a first listen. That's a *very* unusual reaction for me; I'm not sure I've ever done that with a new disc, in fact. I'll post some of those initial reactions tomorrow, when I retrieve them from my computer at work. Cheers Philip
