When Dan Snaith's debut 12" EP as Manitoba was released last October,
no-one - least of all him - expected the overwhelming response the
record received. Limited to a thousand copies, People Eating Fruit
sold out almost immediately.
An unassuming twenty-two year old Toronto resident with a classical
and jazz piano background, Dan is also a hardcore pure mathematician.
Say what? Yep, that's right, he devises abstract theorems for a
living...
For kicks, he makes unbelievable tunes that threaten to crack your
head open with their sheer glorious melodic weight and the army of
beats, toots and soaring trumpetings. This time it's 'Paul's
Birthday'. And it'll get you dancing, too. On the ceiling. 'Paul's
Birthday' was a tune Dan gave to his friend Paul as a birthday gift
last year. Unbeknownst to us here at Leaf, Paul's actual birthday
turns out to be the release date of the 12". Cool, huh?
Flip it for 'Evan Likes Driving': intricate rhythms that want to
burst out of the speakers and head out the door somewhere, followed
by a parade of stray jazzers call and responding, trying to find
their way home.
Dan's first ever recording 'Anna & Nina' was the opening piece on
Invisible Soundtracks: Macro 3. 'Paul's Birthday' will be followed by
his debut album, Start Breaking My Heart, on March 26th.
The single is already being played by DJs as diverse as Ross Allen,
John Kennedy, Mr Scruff, DJ Food and Michael Reinboth, and Dan's own
DJ appearances in London and Paris last week were very well received.
Exclusive DJ mixes will be airing soon on Betalounge.com (from March
30th) and Xfm (John Kennedy's show).
Nick Luscombe's Flow Motion show on Xfm will be airing an interview
with Dan this coming Sunday (March 4th). His show runs from 9-12pm UK
time, and can be accessed via the web at
http://www.xfm.co.uk
A1. Paul's Birthday
B1. Evan Likes Driving
[please note that both sides play at 45rpm - there has been some confusion...]
Early UK press on 'Paul's Birthday':
"Brims with catchy melodies, intricate rhythms and cool jazz breaks
that demand attention. Never quite straightforward, it's a highbrow
construction that could still fill most dancefloors" SINGLE OF THE
WEEK! The Information/The Independent
"This is the kind of music that makes you want to hear more music
like this" Muzik, 4/5
Press on the first Manitoba single, 'People Eating Fruit':
"stunning and exciting... ridiculously catchy melodies and harmonies
that retain a simplistic beauty though the tracks have a lot going on
in terms of beat construction... Next year's best kept secret" 5/5
Leftfield Single Of The Month, iDJ
"a Sun Ra trip over electro beats... really quite special" 5/5
Essential Leftfield Tune, 7 magazine
"stands head and shoulders above the majority of the 'downtempo'
crowd by virtue of his deeply original beats. A delicacy indeed"
9/10, Abstract Single Of The Month, Wax
"a record to curl up and fall in love with" 4/5 XLR8R
