re: the mails below: mr. thong - you're more than entitled to your opinion - and i admit that i too was shocked upon my first listen to "brownout" - but that's the very reason it's stuck with me beyond flavor-of-the-month status. i don't think they intended to make a "dance" record or anything like that, stylistically this is a lot closer to coil or dub or minimal electronics in general than uberzone or crystal method. i think they're not making the record that everyone *wants* or *expects* them to make, and for that reason i respect what they've done. full disclosure, i work for schematic but i'd say that regardless... also - someone else had asked about a release date for brownout? at the mo, it's still tbc but schematic is aiming for something in the range of may. it's been pushed back temporarily b/c of production hangups. stay tuned. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Feb 2001 00:10:32 -0500 To: <idm@hyperreal.org> From: "_Dipfthong_" <kam@columbus.rr.com> Subject: Brown Out is Poo Poo (give up the funk) Message-ID: <001301c09bc4$9ec54e80$cf4a1841@columbus.rr.com> ------=_NextPart_000_0010_01C09B9A.B53FCCA0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable What's happening here guys ? Remember funky ? danceable tracks ? Phonecia were seriously (at lease to me) one of the only funky/danceable 'idm' (die) artists left/around. i loved the 'Odd Jobs' singles and all other Phoenica i've heard including Soul Oddity. This new album entitled 'Brown Out' is, like the r.devine album (and tons others),=20 just clicks, farts, bleeps etc... Really boring, soulless, unfunky! =20 (imo, ofcourse) No BASSLINES!? , beats (remember DRUMS!?) funk to speak of. i find this really sad. I always thought idm was just that. intelligent, dance, music. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 21:44:31 -0800 To: <idm@hyperreal.org> From: "Gonzi 'Fresh' Merchan" <fresh@home.com> Subject: Re: [idm] Brown Out is Poo Poo (give up the funk) Message-ID: <000a01c09bc9$5d9ee4c0$10c40018@flrtn1.occa.home.com> dont be so small minded, this is one of the best albums i've heard in a long, long time. i respect josh and romulo even more because they are willing to progress with their music and take it in new directions. if they were so willing they could have easily become the next crystal method

amen brother. 'nuff said gonzi. on a more productive/positive tip - anyone that's looking for an intro to force inc. material should really pick up the recent "rauschen 15" comp. on cd. i slept on this one for a while, but nearly every artist on the label is showcased here in a 25-track mix by Jasper from Cytrax. It's all straight-ahead 4/4, but prolly one of my favorite techno (in the purest sense of the word) mix discs in a good while... all for now - brock ===== Brock Phillips Motormouthmedia 2525 Hyperion Ave. #1 Los Angeles, CA 90027 fon 323.662.3865 fax 323.662.3844 email bmotor@pacbell.net __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? if you listen to the soul oddity cd, you can hear the progression and movement away from the more dance floor-filling friendly sound and towards the more abstract. this movement has continued with the phoenecia material (soul oddity = phoenecia) as well as the related stuff like jeswa, metic and takeshi. it does not suprise me in the LEAST that brown out continues to get more abstract. IMO, it is a GOOD thing.. while i f'king LOVE soul oddity (despite what josh and rom say, "little alien" is the CUTEST mo-fo dance song ever!), and i have that cd and listen to it A LOT -- i do not need another cd just like it. nor do i need duplications of the rest of their work. i admire that they keep moving towards a different sound... and based on the criticisms here, i cannot WAIT to hear brown out@!! is the new album anything like the mix the ph boys did of tipper? that 12" is OUT OF CONTROL. i dislike the original song, but the ph mix, si begg mix, and mziq mix are certainly a lot of fun! the ph mix reminds me a little of depeche mode's pipeline. maybe its just the mood. or the drugs. oh, and if ya'll have not heard the jeswa mix of the lucky kitchen "life recordings" -- i cannot recommend it enough. not very dancefloor friendly though, unless its the dancefloor in my/your bedroom. peas + love, chris. Got any samples of the album trax? I like what i've heard from phonecia before, i'd be curious to hear this. I imagine from what's said here's its not what i might have been the fucked-up glitchy breakbeat, but either way i'd be curious. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brock Phillips" <bphil_123@yahoo.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Cc: <indecentrobotexposure@hotmail.com>; <fresh@home.com>; <kam@columbus.rr.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 21, 2001 1:48 PM Subject: [idm] phoenecia release date, comments

Yea, you can keep your uberzone and c.method (far from what i'm speaking of..) I guess i was just really looking forward to this release and thought it would be in the vein of they're previous material (Good, Funky, Bumpin') not some Huge step Backwards to this trendy (should be over with) coil/r.devine sketch comedy. I'm not saying all music should have drums/basslines, be funky, dancleable, what have you... I'ts just that these guys were actually Good at it and Were dope, instead of just being dopes... i'ts sad, but 'Brownout' looks like just another 'flavor-of-the-month' in true Internet Dork Music fashion (and i Do mean fashion). Sorry guys. Curious, anyone feel the same way ? anyone else on this list sick of noodly comp. music ? anyone feel like some real Intelligent Dance Music ? wake up. ][`
