I said he is not building hip hop from the ground up (or whatever that
ridiculous statement was) because he samples. He is not innovating because
he's not doing anything unique--there are tons of songs with hip hop vocals
or beats used as another stylistic element in the mix. Understandable
flows, which is to me the basis of what hip hop is, are what I feel is lacking.
It's just the "I'm the savior of hip-hop" attitude that got me (At least,
as was proposed by Warp, I have no idea what Scott's views are on his
work). Particularly it's contradictory to say you're building hip-hop from
the ground up, when you one of the main elements is just sampling and
rearranging it. What he is doing is not much different from any number of
"downtempo" artists (or whatever the genre is), like Kruder and Dorfmeister
or other such stuff. He's just doing it an awful lot better.
