well, considering that the artists on a label define the sound of the label, it looks like warp is changing their sound. oh wait, they've been changing for some time now :) i don't see how the "warp sound" argument still holds up, 7 yrs after the last real artificial intelligence cd came out and with the prevalence of red snapper... i agree that independent labels tend to stick to a particular sound, but that doesn't mean they can't expand and license and release different artists they like. a question for the labelheads on the list - do artists tend to associate strongly with the labels they're signed on? does it depend on the way the label is set up, or is there a difference between a "family" label and a "we release music like this" label...? cheers, /derek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

How can you say Scott isn't innovative just b/c he samples. First, that is what most hip-hop is based on. Obviously OvER-sampling leads to un-original music, but the way he chops up his samples and adds his beats and synth work is genius. Well, at least I don't see anyone else coming close to his work, plus he pumps out like a new full length album every week, most of which are amazing (except backsome). I think we need to stop relating everyone to autechre, or other warp artists, let's face it, the industry's best are now led by a bunch of 20 year old kids with computers, just ending puberty. I don't even consider Scott Herren part of warp, I think he just signed with them b/c they went after him, he is really a hefty/schematic boi! We need to start comparing everyone to people like lexaunculpt/hrvatski/delarosa-asora, etc. I mean, only BOC seems to be keeping up with thei industry on warp. Wait, tiny reminders was the shit. Oh, and I just heard confield the other day, luckily got a promo copy. It's very good, but autechre can still be over-repetitive, even though their sounds are fucking amazing. ANYyyyyyyways, you want innovative, check out scotts: slicker remixes, "paz suite 1", or "livin life" stuff. sincerely, citizen tao

I said he is not building hip hop from the ground up (or whatever that ridiculous statement was) because he samples. He is not innovating because he's not doing anything unique--there are tons of songs with hip hop vocals or beats used as another stylistic element in the mix. Understandable flows, which is to me the basis of what hip hop is, are what I feel is lacking. It's just the "I'm the savior of hip-hop" attitude that got me (At least, as was proposed by Warp, I have no idea what Scott's views are on his work). Particularly it's contradictory to say you're building hip-hop from the ground up, when you one of the main elements is just sampling and rearranging it. What he is doing is not much different from any number of "downtempo" artists (or whatever the genre is), like Kruder and Dorfmeister or other such stuff. He's just doing it an awful lot better. agree here. since when is electronic music not sample-based? i thought that's what it's all about. besides... i think calling him 'innovative' is a bit of an understatement. his stuff is some of the best new music i've heard in a long time. his melody compositions are brilliant.... i mean i could say lots of good stuff... but i don't think i need to .

or just not compare shit and enjoy it.. but i know what you mean. autechre spawned a whole new generation of music. personally, i like stuff that sounds like autechre. i like the aesthetic trajectory they began. i mean every new 'genre' begins somewhere. i think ae started one.
