ok, i guess i'm gonna have to go into the three paragraph thing, i figured the outlandish statement made by that clouddead nutrider would have been pretty self explanatory, and i just felt the need to call him on it. plus shit's pretty off topic, imho. but i got a mailbox full of requests for clarification, so here goes. my problem isn't with the anticon collective per se. i am a huge dose fan, and (although he's not really a member) slug's one of my favorite mcs right now. the rest of them i don't really listen to, i prefer artists like aesop rock and cannibal ox who are out there but, stylistically, aren't as disconnected from the origins/'rules' of hip hop. but anticon's doing their thing, and that's cool with me. i'm just not into 90% of their shit (and for the record, i DO think sole ripped el-p & the whole '98 rawkus/independent as fuck movement to shreds pretty well, even though he played himself as a complete bitch on those i looovvee companny flowww tapes) basically i think ryjan hit the nail on the head. the problem lies in their fan base. the majority of them are a bunch of white kids who up until last year only listened to radiohead or whatever and thought hip hop was on some stupid throw your money at the camera shoot 'em up stupid shit. and then they read about dose one in cmj and suddenly they're die hard heads. that kid that was going on about how clouddead were the best thing in music typifies this whole 'movement'. okay, maybe that's his favorite thing in hip hop, but to say it's the BEST is hip hop is a slap in the face to everyone who has been involved in the shit from day one. and it's his loss that he's gonna limit himself sole will never make a record that hits home like "they reminisce over you" and buck65 will never record an album as emotionally complex as "illmatic". That shit's on a whole other level. You can't compare someone like nas struggling to survive in the QB projects or pete rock dedicating an entire life to collecting records to some suburbanite kids who have had the shit handed to them. they lack that hunger. and the fact is that ANTICON WOULD NOT EXIST WITHOUT THESE INFLUENTIAL RECORDS And i'm pretty sure the anticon guys would even acknowledge that fact. as far as i can tell they're pretty much down to earth in terms of their position in hip hop, it's their fans that took the whole advancement thing and ran with it. i mean, i don't even think anticon is all that innovative for the most part. a lot of these people jocking them only need to look at what organized konfusion, freestyle fellowship, project blowed, the log cabin crew, etc were doing back in the mid-90s to see that. anticon just added a white, suburban, high school art fag poetry twist to it. they're not as disconnected as you'd like to think. i mean, i remeber when sole was in live poets trying to be the white prodigy. um yeah... there now everybody knows andrew www.gljtch.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

All right. That's it. Time out. I think the best thing for this list right now is for everyone on it, as much as possible, to get together for a barbecue. This way, I think we'll eliminate these absolutely hysterical presumptions that some of us think to have about why we like the music we do. Being best friends with Da Kid who went on about clouddead, I can assure you he's far more knowledgable of the roots of hip-hop than you think. But even if a lot of Anticon's fans are a bunch of trendies, does that necessarily brand his music as any less worth it than more "real" artists? People progress at their own paces, folks. The kid who's getting into hip-hop via Enimen today may become the biggest proponent of the Sugarhill label in the near future. Deal. Coming off as condescending isn't going to help your cause, any. Recommend. Don't denigrate. One of my favorite dance/hip-hop style groups is Land Of The Loops. Talk about so-called "whiteness". Hip-hop beats done by a white guy fused with indie pop. How much more Caucasian can you get? Yet, I never heard anyone on this list raise the race card when I talk about the Loops. So, what gives?

thats not hip hop. thats cute hop. or was it cuddle hop? either way, i recommend them too. and clouddead, damn it! because even if clouddead are white, the 2 10"s i have from the suburban kids are mighty fucking fine. its good music. wonderful music. as is the new panasonic (!!!) and richie hawtin (plastikman's) _consumed_. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

<clip> thank you for your opinion. It adds a lot of insight. OK, I retract my previous statement that Anticon are the ONLY thing interesting in hiphop, I was just enthusiastic at the time. I'm all over Organized Konfuzion, Freestyle Fellowship, etc., I guess Anticon is just taking it a new way, whether anyone cares or not. I love shit that comes out of the suburbs. We the mutant army of mutant musics.... Hey, at least it's refreshing.
