[idm] I.D.M. Poll Results !!!
permalink · <LAW-F93GtPrPrvCWO6h00000171@hotmail.com>
i on the whole not only found this poll to be pretty boring, but also pretty offensive. not to defend DipthonG, as i have no idea about any hotline stuff, but i remember the guy who posted this poll mentioned that if you couldn't complete all of the fields fully that you wouldn't qualify as you obviously didn't know enough about the genre and the most popular artists would end up winning if he allowed just anyone to send in their thoughts. well look at the results. the most popular artists ended up winning, and then he complained that not enough people responded. i would have replied with my thoughts on a few albums, but apparently i don't know enough about idm. which brings to mind why the guy polled an idm and not a bunch of accredited idm critics. if most people don't happen to be able to easily find hrvatski records in their local shops, but are lucky enough to get BoC and still enjoy it, why does that make their opinion about what the best idm record is any less valid? just because you've heard 10 albums released this year doesn't mean you'll have heard the 'best' 10 anyway. not to get into the whole elitism thread again, as i find that tired as hell, but my point is that a poll should be by the people, and i'm sure i wasn't the only one who was discouraged from participating merely because of the sheer length and bredth of this poll. if you look carefully, if you haven't seen an idm artist live then you _couldn't_ complete this poll fully without lying or without speculating about the quality of an artist live by listening to a bootleg (which is not the same at all to me). it's a good idea to poll. i like polls. i find them interesting but just because someone can't list their 15 favourite labels doesn't mean their opinions on idm aren't relevant to a poll. although they were obviously not relevant to _this_ poll. and if i sound scathing, hey, it's nothing personal. i just didn't think the poll was run particularily well. it's all in my opinion. and as we all know opinions are like assholes: everyones got one and they're all full of shit. cheers

i hate to get involved. really. but this has become completely out of hand. please, if you don't enjoy what goes on on this list, dipthon, leave. i'm not being mean, or anything. i mean, you're the only person that a large number of people have had problems with, consistently. i dont want to make it seem like this is a "go find another sandbox to play in" thang, but either chill out and wise up a bit, or maybe consider unsubscribing. and however you speak with your friends is one thing, but please respect the fact that there's people of all ages and genders and preferences on this list, and if you require some respect, why would you think that they wouldnt? and i'm not one of those people caught up on being PC. i think that it's quite pretentious to fit this ideal of being 'PC.' but that's another issue. and let's not open it up. it's not idm related :) but some people really don't appreciate the word 'cunt.' even british people. although my friend sam says it quite a bit. anyways, its all really simple. and please don't take this as me attacking you. i'm not. and i'm making this public so that the list doesn't get tattletail messages about "look what he wrote" and all that. my drunk driving white trash low life filth neighbors just pulled into their driveway. that means it's getting late. i still have some homework to finish. i'm getting too old for school. hey, you! martial arts fan! a. ps. how can poll results be boring? it's a poll of favorites, not all new far-outers. np. bogdan raczynski - operative issue (i admit... this was a napster find. anybody have a tracklisting?) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'm sorry you found the poll so boring. I'm not responsible for the votes. Maybe you should have participated and the results might have appeared much less boring to you. As for Bent Crayon. Sorry again. I've never been there and 2 people mentioned in their votes that it was a mail-order only store. I therefore just took their word for it. No, it's true, but if you only listen to 10 albums and only like 1 of them, is it going to be the only one you're going to vote for ? Just because Boards of Canada are widely distributed shouldn't be the only reason for their position at the top of the poll. If you only vote for artists that are easy to find in your local store, then you end up with the entire Warp catalogue and nobody else. I mean, I must say I was surprised to see Fennesz in the top 5 - but it's mainly because people didn't vote only for Aphex Twin or Squarepusher... and if they didn't, it's mainly because they knew other stuff too...
quoted 6 lines and i'm sure i wasn't the only one>and i'm sure i wasn't the only one >who was discouraged from participating merely because of the sheer length >and bredth of this poll. if you look carefully, if you haven't seen an idm >artist live then you _couldn't_ complete this poll fully without lying or >without speculating about the quality of an artist live by listening to a >bootleg (which is not the same at all to me).
No, no no... if *you* look carefully, at the top of the poll, it says that *only* questions 1 to 7 had to be filled out completely. It was perfectly okay if you didn't answer to "best internet radios", "favorite IDM record stores", "best IDM live act" and "best IDM DJ" given that, as you said, not everybody has seen a live act or DJ performance like not everybody listens to the radio or goes to the record store to buy records... Anyway, all the votes I received tackled the questions right as the directions indicated at the top of the poll...
quoted 4 lines it's a good idea to poll. i like polls. i find them interesting but just>it's a good idea to poll. i like polls. i find them interesting but just >because someone can't list their 15 favourite labels doesn't mean their >opinions on idm aren't relevant to a poll. although they were obviously not >relevant to _this_ poll.
Well, first of all, it's 10 labels, then, what would you answer if the question was asked and you didn't have to name 10 ? Well, a lot of people would have still probably answered Warp and Skam as the poll shows, but I don't think there would've been much room for labels like Plug Research or Tigerbeat6 for the simple reason that they're not half as famous... If you give a wider range of answers, you give a fair chance to the smaller labels and for the other categories, the less famous artists... Besides, there's probably at least one record that you haven't listened to that is featured in the results, and if several people voted for it, I think it makes it worth a listen, doesn't it ? Now, imagine that you don't know any of these artists. Don't you think that these results reflect a nice little discography to own ? - I think it does... and it's not just Warp stuff just because they're well distributed... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
