hello. i imagine someone out there can help me with this... i recently snatched up a Roland TR-606 in a small town music shop ($100 USD folks!). i would like to know how i can synch this little feller's "Computer Controlled" timing system with present day midi. the 606 has a 5-pin cable just like modern midi cables, but the machine doesn't transmit or receive midi signals. i imagine there is probably a translator box of some sort on the market, but where? and while we're on the subject, does anyone know if it's worth it to have my 606 'modified' ?? i've read a little about this, and it seems really keen-o. thanks. c. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Short of sending it away, you can go to http://www.drummachine.com and look for a MIDI --> DIN converter box. The 606 uses DIN sync, because it's mad old. Looks like MIDI, but it's not. -l on 1/22/01 4:15 PM, Jordan Koch at kochj@digitalnoise.net wrote:

Another option is to pick up a Roland MSQ-700, which is a really basic old sequencer ("keyboard recorder"), but speaks both MIDI and DIN-Sync. You can't have it sequence both at the same time, but it can send both clocks at the same time, or, take an incoming MIDI clock and send corresponding DIN-sync clock. The advantage is that it's the same price (or less) than the convertors I've come across, and you get a simple sequencer to boot. And, heh, I might have one for sale in a couple of weeks (a couple other things have to happen first). As far as mods go, I'm pretty happy with mine to way it is, but, depending on what you're doing, I could see adding individual outs or boosting the kick - it's not that strong...
