I just picked up Mokira "Cliphop" on Raster-Noton. Very impressive, my fave release on the label since Komet's "Flex". Grabbed my attention a bit better than the latest SND "stdio", I hate to say. Maybe it would help if they got some new samples? Anybody have suggestions for other DSP'd out hip-hop material I may not have heard of? while not entirely similar, it is necessary to recommend Senking's "Trial" release, also on Raster. It's totally sinister, like a chorus of popping speakers. Less hop and more clip, but totally worth it, one of the better releases of 2000, and, in my opinion, leagues beyond snd's "stdio" (which I found to be overrated). matt

SND's second and third 12"ches (newtables and travellog, respectively) are very nice. But "stdio" sounds like a parody of the SND style, a lot of the creativity and lustre of their other releases seems to be lost. Or maybe their sound is just getting a bit overworn with me.. (although I do like Mark Fell's recent solo 12" on hobby industries, shirt trax, etc. a bit) I'd like to see them evolve a bit and tackle slightly different territory, as pan_sonic have done with their latest LP. I hear much more happening in these tracks than in "A"... even string-like washes are present, but in a very pan_sonic way. It's cohesive and totally recognizable as pan_sonic, but nicely and succinctly progressed from their last album. later Andrew -| Andrew Schrock | aschrock@cs.brandeis.edu |- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
