perhaps this is not strictly idm content, but i think this guy is demonstrating in a number of ways what must be the future of electronic music. san franciscans should be familiar with his stuff--he often performs with several compact pieces of music technology and an electric generator in front of the virgin megastore downtown ; making live 'beat jazz' (a sort of ambient jungle with improvisations on a midi wind-controller and some dope effects) on the spot. for one, he is making improvisational electronic music, which makes him actually interesting to watch (as much as i enjoy the music of the san francisco wave of laptop boys, i won't pretend that there's anything to see at their concerts, aside from their pale, skinny faces illuminated by the light-bluish glow of apple powerbooks--a nice photograph, perhaps, but not for that long!). he presequences his beats and cuts back and forth from them using a vaio, and some other odd little sequencers and effects boxes do the rest. he is also important because he is exposing people to this music who never otherwise would see or hear it, playing right on the street ! you see kids just fascinated by him, hip-hoppers nodding their heads, bewildered shoppers staring blankly. street performance is pretty common to every other genre--even opera singing--so why not electronic music ? sorry if you guys have discussed him before but, seriously, it's time to expand. .af. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
