Michael, The FatCat split series of 12"s is a pretty good start... i've got the AMM/Merzbow and Kid 606/De Babylon splits. Actually a better idea is to track down the Fat Cat Split Series 1-8 CD, which has the contents of the first lot of 12"s. With this series, just go for the artists you like, because the series includes hardcore noise artists, minimal techno and postrock bands, a very eclectic mix. Fatcat are not a typical techno label at all. Smoke CDs (ex Allens) in the city carries a range of the Fatcat split's (including the CD)... they don't however have the Pimmon/Plotkin 12" yet, which is supposed to be very good. BTW does anyone know if the Pole/Plotkin imposter 12" was ever released? All the best, aut{audio.image.script} http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/~destruct/aut now: My Things (www.tiln.org)

You mean Plotkin/Pole imposter 12", right? 'Cause the way you wrote it made it sound like the Plotkin tracks were bogus, not the Pole ones... oh, never mind. I'm just feeling nitpicky today. Anyway - the 12" you refer to was never officially released. But promo copies had been pressed and a few were sent out before the error was caught. I know of a couple of people on this list who received copies (Dave Seagal being one of them, I think). Probably some primo eBay fodder there if the owners are so inclined. copies were also given to early arrivals at the recent fat cat split series party... which was a couple of weeks back at somewhere trendy in london. tom x --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

is this the same process who releases (for want of a better word) 'trance' on TIP? I highly recommend "Mystery of the Yeti 2", there is a process track called 'under mount kailash', which apart from some delicious ambience and panflutery has an absolutely brilliant IDM-ish elfy trancey segment... if anyone else has heard it, I'd be very keen to find anything similar... trance by and large annoys the hell of out of me, but every once in a while something like this pops up... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Thanks for all your suggestions everyone. I'm also in the slow process of checking out www.e-rmx.com which has 21 free MP3s (the ones also available on 7"). Yay! On a related note... this has been covered before I'm sure (I think I even asked it!), but the Process on Traum is the same one who did the really nice 'shape-space' on Fatcat, yes? Michael np. Michael (and everybody else, too): I didn't chime in on this at first, but I wanted to put in a recommendation for the Various Artists "no. 8, no. 8.5, no. 9" release on Fat Cat. "no. 8" is in my top ten all-time favorite pieces of electronic music. Someone described it a "a pair of dusty old organs having tantric sex", or something like that, and though that description's maybe a little off (along with my mis-quote), the idea of drawn out tantric sex comes close to the mark. It's one of the closest things I can think of to a purely electronic version of Steve Reich's minimalist composition. Thankfully, the CD of this, plus the remixes that followed, are available on CD via Fat Cat. It contains the original 3 tracks from the 12", as well as remixes by Arovane, Pole, Autechre, and Funkstorung. I rate the Autechre & Arovane mixes highest, but none of them come close to the glory of the original "no. 8". Cheers, Bill -- http://www.chromedecay.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
