Does anyone know where the name "Shuttle 358" comes from? I recall there was a song of that name by a group Small World who released a single on UK label Hard Hands. It was the b-side to 'Living Free'... might've even been called the 'Living Free EP' or something. That a-side was popularised by Kruder and Dorfmeister's DJ Kicks. ("Livin' free, that's my calling...") It's way too specific a name to just be coincidental, surely, but a web search brought up nothing but references to Dan Abram's music. Having finally got hold of 'optimal.lp' and having heard nothing else on the 12k label I was quite surprised by how much it's just straightforward ambient music. I was expecting something more in line with Neina, with obvious digital dissection going on. There are "I just tried to open a Word document in my sound editor of choice" noises (eg. in 'Tank') but certainly washy chords, skitter-free drum machine sounds and riffs you could actually play wasn't what I was expecting. :-) I'm not complaining, though, because I find it really beautiful either way. It reminds me of the equally lovely 'Desert' by Robert Babicz. But I think I appreciate the variety here more. What are other 12k releases like? What I've heard from eg. Taylor Dupree remotely recently has been much more icy static techno stuff. the shuttle358 album pretty much sticks out on 12k, everything after it in the 12k catalog is pretty heavy on the number crunching so-to-speak. I'd recommend thesecretnumbertwelve though, it's just as delicious but for different reasons. take a look at www.12k.com , there are sound bytes from almost every if not every release. i wrote a small-ish overview of 12k for www.igloomag.com recently, altho it was primarily a review of Inoue & Deupree's "active / freeze", so maybe take a look at that too.

yes, SPEC for instance is quite that way. But check out his album ".N" on i forget what label, there are rhythmic variations of an almost techno persuasion at times. I was hoping some enterprising producers out there would begin to rework their newfound editing skills into more.. erm.. musical and melodic works. Which isn't to say i don't enjoy the more abstract stuff, but i think a very musical album with that sort of microsound style integrated into would be pretty nice. the one they call Atom has done quite a bit of that already i suppose... n. . . . . . . ..... . . . . . . The Drum Komputer release 'Alphabeat Flasher'(12K1002), which is Taylor Deupree & Dietrich Schoenemann, along with the Shuttle 358 titles, are my favorite 12K releases. I agree though, before I had heard any of the 12K titles I had a totally different opinion on how they would sound, maybe more along the lines of Mego, Touch or Sonig. Alphabeat Flasher is quite accessible, but the programming is superb. More beat driven, loop-based but continually evolving.
