Andrei seyz: And plus people like Aphex and Autechre sell tens if not hundreds of thousands of records worldwide so is their music demeaned by this shifting of a lot of units ?
quoted 1 line>>>>>>
Anyone have figures or links for what the big acts sell? Chain Reaction type records? If you are a well known artist making music discussed on this list what's a good run for an album? I thought this whole thing was more obscure? I guess big enough as BoC on Jockey Slut cover and all, hmmm... I always thought sales were more in the low thousands... A big record can really make an indie label then? np. Requiem for a Dream soundtrack (looked up the Kronos Quartet and didn't realize they were so massive, they've worked with everyone from Reich and Glass down, and commissioned some 400 works from modern composers...) r:) http://www.fade.to/arc __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Well, I think Aphex is definitely more of an exception, but I'm sure some of his stuff has reached the 100,000 mark, at least. I don't think he'd be able to make videos like "Come To Daddy" and "Windowlicker" if he didn't have some serious backing from his label. I remember seeing an interview with him where he said he was "loaded" and I don't think he was refering to alcohol or drug intake. I imagine BOC do well also. They have a lot of appeal with the indie rock crowd.

Yeah, they're pretty damn popular. I'd recommend these things from their catalogue if you're interested in checking out their stuff: Black Angels & Morton Feldman - Piano & String Quartet Personally I prefer the Arditti String Quartet for contemporary works. Those guys wouldn't even think of getting involved with any superficial, crossover nonsense. They rock, man ! this is correct.. RDJ sells LOADS of records.. c'mon! wake up.. it's not just us IDM kids.. aphex has always been playedin the UK on shows like the evening session, which means appealing to the indie kids, but also you've got the entire spectrum of dance music who respect RDJ for being 'different' or 'weird' or whatever.. this guy is a genius and it frequently amazes me how many people have stuff like selected ambient works in their record collections.. and these are people who just listen to moby or whatever.. didn't windowlicker get to like number 3 in the UK singles chart or something silly ? but then we all know u dont make much cash on singles..it's the albums that count.

correct... music has the right.. i think wasn't a big seller in the beginning (although it wasn't exactly small!) but it was one of those albums which would have achieved a large number of sales, especially internationally, over a period of time.. sufficient enough to build BOCs profile to something huge!! i'd be surprised if they hadn't sold over 100k of records.. indeed.. a big record can make an indie label HUGE. tom x --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah, these are very good ones. Also check out the Schnittke String Quartets, which are fabulous pieces. Very strongly recommended. I won't comment on the rest of the post... Well, when it comes to Aphex, his most commercially successful release was Come To Daddy, which WARP and Sire to this day make a fortune off it. A Sire exec told me that Windowlicker (in sept 99, 5 months after release) was moving 200 units per week. I'd venture to guess they sell quite a bit. Saw John Peel talking to him on tv once, and Peel said he'd sold over a million records worldwide...

C'mon... The KLF pulled off an INTERNATIONAL number one with "Doctorin' The Tardis," how is it so hard to believe that Aphex could've pulled off a number 3 in the UK? -- :: atomly :: atomly@atomly.com | atomly@atdot.org | atomly@curiousnetworks.com http://www.atomly.com | http://www.mp3.com/atomly --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

But if you play "Doctorin' The Tardis" to a regular guy on the street, it doesn't sound like it's broken...Most normal people (yeah, all you idm boys'n'girls are freaks! ;) listen to WindowLicker and think it's just all wrong... Don't get me wrong though, I wish windowlicker had got to number one!
