Has anyone lent their ears to Ruta 5's 'Austral' compilation of Chilean electronic music, or any other comps featuring South American artists? I'd been interested to know your thoughts. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

what makes up a compilation? stick to the point definitely! well, this is mostly the fact; the themes are the labels and they artists itself. often the subject is music style direction, sometimes tracks from TV-publicity-spots, even the state of mood (!!! very popular german compilation series is called "kuschelrock" witch means "snuggle rock" !!! i think there is part 135, or so, by now). "austral" is something special. the connection between the tracks is santiago de chile, the living place of 8 artists on this compilation. the only one. even the "latino" direction, which i'd expected doesn't exist - contrary to the introduction in the booklet: the music direction definitely doesn't refer to the south american continent, not to mention latin-american style. and after i caught this i enjoyed the music very much - "austral" is the perfect party-cd. but you should start with track #2 - not to startle your guests! well, atom heart titled his track "dos track" and this is what you should expect from: it could be a part of his own "rather interesting" album "dos tracks :)" (RI 051) - not really the party bomb ;) the other tracks act accordingly to the (good) partyflow: it starts reserved, guarded / slowly force the pace / get to the point / ejaculate / ends reserved / tries to make more but can't and ends definitely - abrupt! 02. adn (daniel nieto): "harto de nada" - slow-but-hard-tempo track. chilean "plaid"? well, it reminds a bit on the english duo. trip-hop, down-tempo d&b, funny melody. 03. skip (pierre bucci): "yahow" - this guy turns the buttons a bit harder. skippy breakbeat + vary tempo + aphex-twin-like melody. 04. jog (andres bucci): "dial" - smooth down-beat hip-hop track with french-speaking-(phone)-female-voice. 05. rick y martin (dandy jack/ricardo villalobos) - now, at the latest, your party guests are dancing. steel drums and lucid percussions + a funky beat take effect! 06. villalobos (ricardo villalobos): "808 base queen" it was very clever to place RV at the end of the compilation! simple house beats and echoed melody... drag-queen-voice repeats the title of the track, and all your gay guests are out of their minds!!! 07. sence club (lucien nicolet/ricardo villalobos): "bajo tierra" - the party goes on!!! spacey-tracey-house sound at the beginning opens the door to the only latin sounded track. house-ole! 08. bajo tierra (washington miranda/ricardo villalobos): "bajo tierra" - very good dance track with aggressive bass in front and soundscapes in background. zenith of the 70-minute party (ok, it's a bit compressed party i know ;) 09. adn: "alborada oriental" - now you deserved a cigarette. and atom heart? what's with track #1? well this track is definitely my favorite one, but it doesn't really fit to the rest of the compilation. the same as on the gonzalo martinez's "la cumbia triste rmx" cd, atom heart sounds like an alien. yes, this exactly is the perfect word, like someone from any unknown galaxy - alien indeed! conclusion: this album is great fun! i like it even more after listening a few times! congratulations to the "payola" label, if "payola series 1" means it's their first release, then this is a perfect start! i hope they are going to release atom, dandy and the others again - both together and separately! ____________________________ Ruta 5: Austral ("payola series 1") to be released soon on the german label "payola". enjoy, but safely =: ma_hovina (many thanks to my dear friends rachel frendrup and glenn hammett) --
