the post was obviously flame-bait, the kid is probably confused and lonely and wanted to get some attention, so he resorted to the best method he could come up with using the limited resources allowed him by his ecstacy-addled young mind: immature generalizations. anyway, don't let it get to you, the best way to deal with loudmouth youngsters is to ignore them. personally, i think robbie williams is much more talented AND cuter than n'sync or ricky martin, plus a lot wittier. josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Tue, 5 Dec 2000, Heather L Woskey wrote:

Come on people ! Isn't it rather obvious that this was purposely posted to piss people off ? "joe jackson" at hotmail... It's so clever ! :P On a different note, I was watching some of this "100 Greatest Pop Songs" thing on MTV the other week and throughout the countdown they kept using a piece of music right before presenting each song that sounded like something that could be on Suction. Were they actually playing some Suction record ? Suction ? Andrei

Ha ha ha ha, this thread is so fucking retarted it makes me want to puke, or start going to more IDM shows. Every time I read posts like Mr. Jackson's I think "Jesus Shitballs, I didn't think the list could get any worse...". Seriously, I say we split the list, one list for people who actually want to discuss release, colloborate on projects, make connections, etc. And one list dedicated to masturbatory posting such as "I Think GurlZ R Gross", "House is for Fags" and "KID606 RULZ". But you know what, I love this list. Seriously, it provides lots of opportunities for jokes and derogatory track titles... Here's an example: Friend: "Ha ha ha, did you see that dumbass post to IDM?" Me: "Ha ha ha, yeah. 'House vs. IDM', that's so fucking stupid!" Both: "Ha ha ha" Here's a track title: "The IDM List (fucking stupid mix)" Anyway... I think there should be an IDM netmeet. Seriously, we should all get togather and just admire our own wankiness. I volunteer my house. I'm not kidding, let's do an IDM netmeet. There will be beer for people who like house, Vodka for the techno fans, JD for the junglists, and Diet Coke for the IDMers. -andrew -- Eupholus Records (217)353-5188 http://www.eupholus.net/ "We use sex, rock 'n roll, and dope as part of the communist plot. I live in Urbana-Champaign, IL which is pretty much in the middle of the fuckin' MW. We should try to sync this event with some IDMtype shot in the area, (chicago, Iowa City, etc.). -andrew -- Eupholus Records (217)353-5188 http://www.eupholus.net/ "We use sex, rock 'n roll, and dope as part of the communist plot. we had a 313 meet during DEMF and it worked out well. i realize the list isn't 313 based at all, but it was a perfect time as many ppl were in town from the US and otherwise. The whole Wendy/Walter sex-change thing has not been real clear to me. I have a copy of Sonic Seasonings on vinyl that says Walter Carlos on the cover. I have read/heard many stories as to why Wendy used to be called Walter. I have a hard time believing any of them. Even though she does kind of look like John Malkovich with a bad toupee! She/He was/is a huge influence on many artists today.(BoC being one of the obvious ones) I believe that Autechre noted her as being an influence in an interview a few years back. Oh well, either way(with or without a shlong) Wenter has produced some great work.(Sonic Seasonings, STs:Tron and The Shining as well as A Clockwork Orange) Rick --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I don't get it. Can someone explain that? They all seem to like N'Sync and Ricky Martin and things like that. As far as I can tell, no females listen to or write IDM (unless you count Mira Calix, but since Ae writes all of her stuff, it doesn't really count). I mean, I guess it's just something genetic or whatever that they can't appreciate IDM. I'm not holding it against them or anything.. it's just sort of sad that they can't understand music unless it's sugar-coated and mass-marketed directly to them. If there ARE any girls on here who actually do listen to IDM, I'm curious to know which tracks your boyfriends used to introduce you to the genre? _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. One day in the real world, and I wake up at 4 am to find this thread!!! Xcuse me Joe, I take offense to your comments. Not only do i work for a label that has an amazing electronic female artist - Riz Maslen (Neotropic) when I ran my Save The Vinyl imprint in the mid-90's I tried to sign her, I also signed another artist, currently working in LA, called The Angel whose done production work with Smith & Mighty and has her own Channel 60 (i think?) projects. I also know Mira Calix from when she worked @ Ambient Soho on Berwick St London when I was running Save The Vinyl on the same road. As well as Nina Walsh, who humorously created Sabrettes and even got the Scottish Tartans to acknowledge her Tartan colours officially. Andrea Parker used to sit at the door of Sabresonic every Friday night with Nina and these two powerhouses created some diverse incredible IDM Music. In fact, I have tried to turn many people on to the emotional power of Andrea Parkers work on Mo Wax. It is nothing less than stunning. I have always been a fan of IDM music - the more out there or obtuse (and I am talking about a twenty year plus love affair with sounds from Eno to Ryuichi Sakamoto back to Jon Hassell and Aphex Twin) - the more abstrakts the more I like it. It was I who dragged a kicking journalist from Muzik Magazine to see Laurie Anderson show in London a few years back (I've seen her live performances going back to the early 80's)- He had to apologize for being so clueless and being so incredibly impressed with her talents. Several years ago I had the privilege of working on a compilation put together by Scanner for his Electronic Lounge that I off regularly attended, and Sprawl is part run by Iris who under various alias does her own photography, djing and music making. And then there's Irene on this list who dj's in South Africa while juggling a family of a couple of kids.... My last boyfriend turned me onto to Northern Soul and American Jazz - altho he was from the North of England, he knew more about the history of Black Music in America than most Americans know. He shamed me when I thought a Maceo Parker sax solo was a guitar break in a review of a record I once wrote. I turned him onto Derrick May's Strings of Life when it came out in 1988- he was instantly converted to house. I told Gilles Peterson in 91 that techno was jazz, listen to the drum beats. Gilles later told me I was too clever. Please do not insult the intelligence of women on this list, or did you just make this post just to get everyones reaction? Duh, ha ha -- i took the bait. (dont get me wrong, i am no flaming feminist) PS We've already had the thread about who is the best looking female eletronic artist.....We also had the one about which idm artist is gay...does any of this matter if the music is what we're all here for????

ok, I came into the office this morning with this crazy thread and every one getting their panties in a flaming bunch. if you approach stuff like this in a tizzzy-no point gets made. I'm not going to lie.It _was_ a female who took me to my first party. It was a male who got me into techno and it was a male who got me *further* into IDM. However, I took it from there. First said male didn't do much for the education of music but just simply introduce me to the right crowd (ie.no drugs), I had to learn basically every thing else on my own,as our *friendship* faded. Second said male just introduced me further into something I already knew existed and was already part of my record collection. (perhaps we should talk about women not buying vinyl too) Lets also be truthful with ourselves. If you go to a Autechre show or Kid606, how many females are there? I bet a penny that we're outnumbered. Bid deal, more cute IDM boys for me to talk music with. Our loss suddenly became our gain (ooo i can hear people's panties bunching). I'd rather go to an IDM or techno show, I'm guarenteed more straight males that way. I love house when I need it and I love jungle too (the deep dark twisted shit-not that LTJ sissy stuff). Perhaps why most men (esp. straight ones) don't like house is b/c they have to let go of themselves and their installed insecurities and dance. Here's a clue: a man who can let go a bit on the floor is much more appealing than a wallflower IMHO. Let me make it clear that I'm not into this music to catch a man, but _please_- I am human, in the prime of my 20s, choose to stay single and not butt ugly...cut me some slack for living-please. Joe, the Mira Calix is one of my current favorites. If she has Ae writing her stuff- well that's one BIG point for her already. If Ae wanted to produced me coughing with the sound of elephants sneazing in the background-I'd be flattered. If you are looking for some teenage ass, might I suggest a rave or two. You could become the favorite, older "unkle" with the magic pills. If your post is your idea of tact might I suggest putting down your joystick and Vaseline and joining us in the world- but please buy a comb...bed head went out with grunge (hmmm..another thing most chicks weren't into). Your point was clear after the first two sentences. As we say on 313.."back to the music." Diana Potts NP:Nicole Willis, Soul Makeover (nice for a winter morning) and yes Joe, her husband-Jimi Tenor- produced her album. -----Original Message----- From: joe jackson [mailto:xcylobx@hotmail.com] Sent: Monday, December 04, 2000 10:42 PM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: [idm] Why don't girls like IDM? thats because all of the girls who like idm like to stay ON TOPIC, so we don't post very often...yet, we feel we have to raise the rights to our gender and post when we see a dumbass comment like that...or they don't feel like taking this goddam abuse, so they choose not to join the list...i happen to stay on this list for good music information...and i post when there is something good MUSICALLY to talk about...or, when someone pisses me off enough because i have a vagina, i like to tell them what the hell i feel... There are girls that both listen to and make idm, but Wendy Carlos is probably not the best example for a wide variety of reasons, maily that the bulk of her music precursed idm by well over 2 decades. Not that i'm slagging her, i truly enjoy her music. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. I think there's another more obvious `real' reason why Wendy Carlos is not not the best example. Anyway, I recall someone here compiling a list of female electronic musicians a year or two back. Whatever happened with that? I would be very eager to see her list now. I feel strongly that a web page should be set up to quell this re-curring thread. I think I'm the wrong gal to set it up though. About Mira Calix... the first ep was `produced' (or whatever) by her Ae boyfriend, but that's it. The _Pin Skeeling_ single was a collaboration with Disjecta. Her actual album was mainly her... right? And it was very disappointing by its own right. I hate to say it, but yeah, her ep with Ae was the best thing she's done so far and it's going to take a long time for her to shed the "Ae writes all of Mira Calix's stuff" misconception because of that. .`-). christopher miller o o.' evil@fdt.net == ' on: Lektrogirl _I Love My Computer_ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

So I must say that I am as horrified as everyone else to hear such a broad generalization of girls and their supposed infatuation with the likes of misantropes such as ricky martin and others, I have a few female friends that are very into the IDM genre. But you have to appreciate the fact that the majority of IDM fans are guys. my 2 cents jason ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mark Richardson" <markr8@bellsouth.net> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Monday, December 04, 2000 9:51 PM Subject: Re: [idm] Why don't girls like IDM?

I know plenty of girls that like IDM. In fact, if anyone went to the Kid606 show at the Knitting Factory in LA, you would have seen many females, dressed up/dressed down, *not* necessarily hanging on their boyfriends arm, digging the music. I don't think many girls really *care* about dorky boys drooling over synths, but I know plenty of *boys* that don't care about dorky boys drooling over synths. If the music is interesting in any way beyond how it was created, there will be people that are attracted to it. The only reason there's this geeky boys club elitism is from a bunch of people that get so involved in their little programming world they temporarily lose track of their social skills (I say this out of experience). Then there are the affected intellectual wannabes...who are very wack. -l -l[e^2] --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think you are drawing conclusions where there are none. Perchance you don't know the right girls. Or perhaps you do, but they don't go crazy about telling you about their IDM leanings? Girls are generally less anally retentive, detailed and autistic than your average hunter gathering man-child and hence are less inclined to get obsessive about the maintenance of a record collection or telling other people about it ("look how much stuff I've got and how hard it was to find and how weird it is and how cool I am wank wank wank.."). That is a crass generalisation, obviously. There are equally many boys out there who like fun commercial music and don't really care about letting others know about it. The girls I know who incline towards obscurer IDM-leaned stuff like what they like, but aren't going to go crazy buying records that AE might have touched once off e-bay just to make themselves feel special. That might be the distinction you are noticing.

I should imagine if I had tits I would find that quite insulting. My girlfriend introduced me to BOC many moons ago, so there. And no; she didn't get into it through a previous boyfriend. This is my first time posting here. I knew something like this was going to come up sometime. I consider myeself genderless. With that said, I sort of have a different take on what I observe of the "typical" male/female genders. I notice this ridiculous thing that they do, which is stereotype, and characterise what the opposite gender does. They say stuff like "why dont girls like idm?" This is such an aggrevating question to me. I know plenty of girls that like idm! My life partner for one. she introduced me to autechre, and all other idm that I have ever heard. THe fact is many people just do not get introduced to idm or any music that is not just given to them on the top 40 radio. that is where the problem lies. ophelia "nihil" rien --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I love idm. My boyfriend can barely tolerate it. I've tried to get him to enjoy it more over the past year but he's too locked into industrial music. i believe this one deserves a mighty fuck you as well in fact i find it hard to believe that this thread exists on this list - most people i know who are into experimental music tend to be very open minded - so i am amazed to find such blatant sexism goin on here... personally i know plenty of females who are into experimental music (danceable or otherwise) but that really is not the point i am not the type to go posting to lists about stuff unless it really irks me (maybe i should say irc - i spend most of my time there...) - not that that means anything either basically life is empty and meaningless and we (humans) make up lots of stuff (identities stories drama art etc) to fill it in IMHO of course music does not care what sex you are peace ben -- ben milstein aka mintyfresh www.soundmangle.com - your home for experimental dance music... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

apparently you never got your hands on the copy of the "how to be a guy manual" that we receive around 13...it's in the job description...it's a book we listen to very closely...as we've seen an example of recently on this list. included in the "things we know for a fact section" ...and I quote..."girls don't like cool things"...unfortunately the book doesn't delve too deeply into the topic of what is a "cool thing"...this causes problems when you encounter another rule of men this section is under "personal beliefs"...and this states, "whatever you do is cooler then whatever anyone else does"...so by going by this you unfortunately run into problems when guys can't find any girls that are into his "cool thing" he then resorts to the "girls don't like cool things" rule which leads him to believe that what he feels is truth when in fact the problem that he is actually encountering can be found on the first page of the manual in big bold letters "think with your penis"...and on the following page also in bold letters is "you are gods gift to women" this ties itself in by helping the young male not actually -look- for women who are into "his cool thing" it leads him to believe that they should in fact...in this case...present themselves to him naked with a Boards of Canada CD clenched between their teeth...I hope this has helped clear up any questions... josh23 |I hope this made sense in some way...I think it did to me...:)| __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I don't get it. Sorry my English is too bad for that. First I said I had never met a girl who likes idm (without mentioning stupid sexist approaches). Then you say I'm blind if I do not see other girls on this list. In response I say that though I'm perfectly sure there ARE girls who like idm and some of them I had correspondence with (i.e. Irene MC is extremely nice person) but I have never met any person from this list anyway as I live in Ukraine and it seems that I'm the only listmemeber from here. So.... What does your last message mean? Why do you mention males? Sorry I'm probably too stupid to get that. 8)

So's this! The whole reason I don't use a Mac or NT is because I ENJOY USING DOS!! =). Anyway...my housemate just came home with a copy of the new BoC ep. IMO it's very disappointing, all very repetitive and not changing very much all the way through each track. I realise that a lot of people might like this, and maybe the changes are too subtle for me to notice on a single listen. Irritating. On the other hand, I'm really feeling the Marshall Mathers LP. Dre's productions is great as usual except for the cheesy synth-cello sound on 'Kim'. That said, 'Kim' is the most angry track I've heard for a long while. Makes my scalp tingle each time it plays. Welcome to the Eminem list :-) Is that the one dedicated to the lovely Kimberley, his wife - who was recently rushed to hospital due to a bungled suicide attempt after a Kurt Cobain like dislike at being thrust into the limelight ... ?? I'm referring to women who post on the list. Clearly these are women who like IDM. I never said you had to have met them in person. I meant "blind" as in you can see the _posts_. And I wasn't just talking to you, I was talking to everybody in this thread (especially whoever started it) who seems to be talking as if they are unaware of the fact there there are women on the list. It's riduculous having a thread like "why don't like girls like IDM" on this list when there are all these women around! (As for use of the word 'met', I tend to use it differently depending on the context, sometimes I mean in RL, other times I mean online. Better think about that one, I realize it can be confusing!) the way this thread is trailing off I feel like the girls/women/females on this list should all of a sudden be put behind glass with signs that say 'do not feed with vinyl'. I'm not sure which one is worse. there's only so much you can beat a dead horse before it starts to sound like a screaming cat. d -----Original Message----- From: Ross Balmer [mailto:ross@tui.co.uk] Sent: Wednesday, December 06, 2000 9:27 AM To: Konstantin Minko; IDM Subject: RE: [idm] Why don't girls like IDM? I'm friends with one girl who feels that way, she doesn't post anymore. I don't know how many others there are out there. I'm not at all happy with the situation on the list making people who have something constructive to contribute feel uncomfortable about posting.
