Michael, I've been going nuts over the future-jazz groove.... (or "broken beat," or "West London," or whatever you wanna call it) I joined the acid-jazz list in a search for info (acid-jazz@uscd.edu, not sure of the subscription info, still looking for it), which has turned out to be a decent resource. If you're down with Dego I'm sure you know 2000 Black; other labels include Main Squeeze, People, Laws of Motion... There are a slew of artists that all swap members & aliases - a few of the best are IG Culture, Modaji, Restless Soul - but I pretty much buy by label. All those labels have excellent comps out (including "The Good Good," the new 2000 Black comp being released domestically on CD by Planet E), which are great jumping off places... For buying (at least in the US) you can't do better than Groove Dis (www.groovedis.com) outta Chicago. Though I suppose that won't help you much... I'm listening to this stuff more than almost anything else these days... 2001 looks to be a brilliant year! I've been pretty into that myself, but more of the german Sonar Collektive stuff (Jazzanova, Extended Spirit, Kosma, & more). Pretty awesome stuff. The 2000 Black Label is pretty awesome also. The Seiji single with Into "The Now/Silver Blossoms" is great! I noticed that the 2000 Black comp finally came out. I'm very curious about the 4 Hero remix of Naima (John Coltrane) featured on the comp. I've heard about IG Culture, but I haven't found any in the shop. I know of the collaboration between IG/Dego, but i haven't found it yet. --- Philip Sherburne <philip@askjeeves.com> wrote:

I had just picked up the dbl. discer Jazzanova remix comp, and I've actually been somewhat unimpressed by it. I had hoped for a more "live" feel and most of the tracks on it simply substitute a latin, or swinging, beat rather than reworked rhythm (i.e. it sounds kind of like what I expect out of Thievery Corp). Maybe I just need to listen to it more, for while I really enjoy their work, this remix stuff lacks the spirit of it. But this area is certainly bursting with creativity at the moment. I don't like all of their remixes. The Jazzanova remix of 4 Hero is awesome. Their two eps are really good. I am also pretty fond of most of the Extended Spirit (part of the Jazzanova crew) releases. Really quality material --- James R McPherson <andregurov@juno.com> wrote:
