this seems to be a mainly american list so i was wondering whether or not I should bother mentioning that "Donkey Rhubarb" was used to advertise some company or other (Insurance?) sometime in 1999. The advert was of a pencilly animation of a sort of pigeon creature walking on two legs and strutting at all manner of angles across flat surfaces in a desperate attempt to do something with a suitcase. My powers of concentration re: TV are just too immense, so I apologise if this is too in depth and detailed for u. x -----Original Message----- From: cognition@ns.sympatico.ca [mailto:cognition@ns.sympatico.ca] Sent: 15 November 2000 14:43 To: Diana Potts; ...IDM list; ...313 list Subject: Re: [idm] Re: what the Diana Potts wrote:

<snip> just wanted to echo diana's comments. and this being posted on the idm list, which initially grew out of an aphex twin list, i thought i should point this out: years ago (maybe even 5?) aphex twin's music was being used in commercials: i can remember the commercial for Pirelli in particular because it won some awards. There are essentially 2 different kinds of music used in commercials: a) unknown producers who work 9-5 M-F and write "television music" for a living (and i'm not knocking these people; they are many musicians who work in the background and/or who have anonymous music-related dayjobs, john tejada, for example, had/(has?) a dayjob doing sample cds; personally, my dayjob is pding at the local campus/community radio station; the bills *do* have to be paid, anyway, i'm offtopic); they (the unknown producers) are often asked to *imitate* certain songs/sounds/etc and they do this because it is their job, and, b) situations such as this with atkins where a track such as atkins' is used in a commercial. i'd much rather hear, personally, b): atkins' track in a commercial with atkins getting paid and proper credit, than a) with a ford focus commercial where someone who paid to make a track *like* atkins'. and, regardless of how we feel about ford/cars/etc, i can speak from experience re: an artists' music being used in commercials: i'm no atkins (far from it), but my music has been used in radio ads, theatre, film, documentaries, etc, and it is extremely flattering (and even gratifying) to know someone wants to use *your* music (out of a myriad of choices) as the music bed, for whatever it is worth (and i'm not talking money here), instead of just some anonymous beat. tons of thought and money is put into what music gets used in a commercial for a huge company like ford. heck, mills said his biggest goal is to do soundtracks and he did the metropolis soundtrack on his own (initially) because he just *had to* do that kind of thing to satisfy himself. we shouldn't take this for granted (artists we respect doing/having their music used in commercials and/or doing soundtracks) and we should feel proud that juan atkins' music is used in this commercial and not a moby or fatboy slim or unknown. not wanting to drag this out, just wanted to add my perspective. pardon the rambling, i haven't been to bad yet (due to my "dayjob") andrew "don't forget about the fundraising auction on http://techno.ca/cognition" duke :) np minnie ripperton--adventures in paradise (1974/epic) not her best album -- Cognition/Andrew Duke's In The Mix 3rd annual Fundraising Auction for CKDU is now underway: http://techno.ca/cognition auction ends Wednesday November 29 at 12noon AST --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
