Can anyone possibly describe these releases in plain, normal language - the descriptions which accompany most Choc Indus. stuff on sale lists seem to be far superior to the releases those words are about. Anytime the names Stravinsky, Mingus, and Coil are used in one descriptive sentence my quality alarm goes off. In other words, are these releases truly infused with the spirit of jazz that they purport? Or are they the same crunchy beat mediocrity Choc Indus. rehashes again and again ... VA: Rapid Transit CD (CHOCOLATE INDUSTRIES) WHILE: Even CD (CHOCOLATE INDUSTRIES) Thanks for any help! J np: CiM _Reference_ (DeFocus) "You should dream more, Mr. Wormold. VA: Rapid Transit Well, neither Mingus or Stravinsky come to mind when I hear it, but maybe that's my shortcoming... :) I actually made mention of this release the other day when someone mentioned prefuse-73. I don't have it in front of me, but prefuse has 2 tracks and a couple of remixes, el-p (company flow) does a remix of roots manuva's "juggle tings proper," the original east flatbush project's "tried by twelve" is on here along with the funkstorung remix of it, pbo and ko-wreck technique have some stuff, doseone has a track, ummm, sluta leta is on there, and while has the last track. i think saying that this release is "jazzy" isn't such a great description... There are defintely elements of jazz philosophies, I suppose, inasmuch as a number of the tracks are remixes or reworkings of originals, and the producers took improvisational liberties with the song structures... but, then you are getting into some bullshit dj spooky intellectualizations and he's a fucking pretentious shit. SO, I suppose the general vibe is definitely more hip-hop-ish than anything else, and how far jazz is from hip-hop you can decide and argue for yourself. While: Even I didn't give it that good of a listen, so I won't comment. As far as Choc. Industries "[rehashing mediocre crunchy beats]," well, that's for you to decide. I haven't heard much of choc's output. z

For what it's worth, I agree and think that the comparisons of Sluta Leta to Coil and While to Mingus were a little uncalled for. I'm a little lost where they extrapolated these reviews from. I mean - everybody has to hype their shit up, do some publicity and so forth, but I'm more in favor of description than deception. Well the question is were the reviews from the labels 1 sheets or from the descriptions that distributors came up with ?
