Do don't say "IDM" say "weird electronic shit" or something like that if you really need a label. Actually "weird electronic shit" is 1000 times more descriptive than "Intelligent Dance Music" (whatever the hell that is)

IDM is, on the whole, no more "complex" than it is "intelligent" Props to kid606 for calling IDM "Innovative Digital Music" but then again, that really isn't appropriate either. case in point. -andrew -- ----=Urbana Youth Outreach=---- ========-White Rabbits-======== -----------+Dasein+------------ http://www.konfused.net/~asmith/ Eupholus Records: (217)353-5188 http://www.eupholus.net/ "The stupider it looks, the more important it probably is..." --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I usually stick to "weird techno stuff" or "experimental electronic" depending on to whom I'm speaking. Or say something like "you know Aphex Twin?"

I always thought IDM stood for "I Don't Move," judging from IDM shows, at least. -- :: atomly :: atomly@atomly.com | atomly@atdot.org | atomly@curiousnetworks.com http://www.atomly.com | http://www.mp3.com/atomly --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think IDM fans are just intelligent enough to realize that people who get their groove on at electronic shows usually just embarrass themselves... -Greg

Oh we wouldn't want that, now would we? Right. I hate going to a show and seeing all those morons dancing. God forbid I ever join their flailing ranks. Besides, there might be gurls watching... *blush* -andrew -- ----=Urbana Youth Outreach=---- ========-White Rabbits-======== -----------+Dasein+------------ http://www.konfused.net/~asmith/ Eupholus Records: (217)353-5188 http://www.eupholus.net/ "The stupider it looks, the more important it probably is..." --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

wow... i wonder how many more times we'll bring up this topic before the end of the year. it's so funny. if you don't like it, call it something else. but don't come to the list and say that you don't like it. everyone on the list already knows that everyone doesn't like it. there should be something on the welcome message that says something like "as to the name itself, well, no one really likes it. but we're not going to change it. so don't post to the list saying that *you* don't like it. we know that already." moving on... top ten of recent memory (no order here...) 01: v/a: cottage industries: neo ouija great comp. full of melody and soul. one of the many excellent comps to come out this year. 02: v/a: putting the morr back in morrissey: morr music another great set of music by lots of different people. lots of melody, with nice crunchiness, too. 03: styrofoam: the point misser: morr music does morr release *bad* music? this album is great. very pretty n' gritty. 'the earth is burning pt 1' is classic. 04: dntel: something always goes wrong: phthalo okay. so i haven't even heard the whole album, but what i heard i really, really liked. great electronic stuff. abrasive kinda like early aphex or something. 05: v/a: neurokinetic: toytronic yet another good comp featuring lots of people from the above comps, and some others. has that excellent novel23 track 'blink run away to east'. 06: rothko: forty years to find a voice: lo recordings three men with three bass guitars. not as straightforward as it sounds, cause they do lots of different things with them, and have some guests in the studio for some tracks. 07: novel23: melodies for childhood... : pitchcadet more melodies with clickiness and stuff. 08: aphelion: zugwang: defocus great album of atmospheric techno with an old school feel. i've heard it compared to b12 and black dog, and i think those are valid comparisons. really lush. 09: mandrake: shake your space traveller: involve another good release on the involve imprint. lots of different styles with an overall "fun" feeling. 10: jega: geometry: planet mu/matador not quite so much like spectrum, which to me is a good thing. not that i completely didn't like spectrum. i just like this one much better. some very different sounds this time around. very nice. now i have to go home tonight and listen to all of these in a row... =) goodbye, alan! np:cottage industries. mmmm... p.s. speaking of mmmm... anyone else picked up hmm on sprawl? it's a collection of hymns reworked by electronic folks. freeform's version of "morning has broken" is one of the best/funniest things i've heard all year. right up there with the "freeform is a bad motherfucker" track on alt.frequencies.4. haven't had time to really get into the rest of the album yet, so it's not on my top ten. but it's a neat concept regardless. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well, when questioned I usually refer to it as "electronica" or just "weird electronic shit", which conveys the basics of the genre to those who don't listen to it and is instantly recognised by those who do. Everyone's a winner. -- Mark Stevens http://www.headspin.clara.net/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
