Do don't say "IDM" say "weird electronic shit" or something like that if you really need a label. Actually "weird electronic shit" is 1000 times more descriptive than "Intelligent Dance Music" (whatever the hell that is)

I usually stick to "weird techno stuff" or "experimental electronic" depending on to whom I'm speaking. Or say something like "you know Aphex Twin?"

wow... i wonder how many more times we'll bring up this topic before the end of the year. it's so funny. if you don't like it, call it something else. but don't come to the list and say that you don't like it. everyone on the list already knows that everyone doesn't like it. there should be something on the welcome message that says something like "as to the name itself, well, no one really likes it. but we're not going to change it. so don't post to the list saying that *you* don't like it. we know that already." moving on... top ten of recent memory (no order here...) 01: v/a: cottage industries: neo ouija great comp. full of melody and soul. one of the many excellent comps to come out this year. 02: v/a: putting the morr back in morrissey: morr music another great set of music by lots of different people. lots of melody, with nice crunchiness, too. 03: styrofoam: the point misser: morr music does morr release *bad* music? this album is great. very pretty n' gritty. 'the earth is burning pt 1' is classic. 04: dntel: something always goes wrong: phthalo okay. so i haven't even heard the whole album, but what i heard i really, really liked. great electronic stuff. abrasive kinda like early aphex or something. 05: v/a: neurokinetic: toytronic yet another good comp featuring lots of people from the above comps, and some others. has that excellent novel23 track 'blink run away to east'. 06: rothko: forty years to find a voice: lo recordings three men with three bass guitars. not as straightforward as it sounds, cause they do lots of different things with them, and have some guests in the studio for some tracks. 07: novel23: melodies for childhood... : pitchcadet more melodies with clickiness and stuff. 08: aphelion: zugwang: defocus great album of atmospheric techno with an old school feel. i've heard it compared to b12 and black dog, and i think those are valid comparisons. really lush. 09: mandrake: shake your space traveller: involve another good release on the involve imprint. lots of different styles with an overall "fun" feeling. 10: jega: geometry: planet mu/matador not quite so much like spectrum, which to me is a good thing. not that i completely didn't like spectrum. i just like this one much better. some very different sounds this time around. very nice. now i have to go home tonight and listen to all of these in a row... =) goodbye, alan! np:cottage industries. mmmm... p.s. speaking of mmmm... anyone else picked up hmm on sprawl? it's a collection of hymns reworked by electronic folks. freeform's version of "morning has broken" is one of the best/funniest things i've heard all year. right up there with the "freeform is a bad motherfucker" track on alt.frequencies.4. haven't had time to really get into the rest of the album yet, so it's not on my top ten. but it's a neat concept regardless. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well, when questioned I usually refer to it as "electronica" or just "weird electronic shit", which conveys the basics of the genre to those who don't listen to it and is instantly recognised by those who do. I started having a lot more fun at parties and shows once I figured out that almost _nobody_ knows how to dance. Just shake yer ass and don't fall down, and everyone will assume you know what you're doing. (Most of them are too worried about being found out to notice anyway.) Jump around. Boogie. Pogo! Stare at yer shoes and sway back and forth. Just don't stand there looking sullen - it makes _me_ self conscious when I'm doing the Electric Slide. ;P Embarassment requires your consent. -- Kevin | "Philosophy, improperly applied, inevitably Murphy | leads to paralysis." --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The thing that I think is funny is that not one person likes the term IDM, yet we all continue to use it. I guess it's kind of like the election. We all hate the system of government that exists now, but about half of us still vote. And those that don't, do anything to change it. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

For me it normally goes something like this... "what kind of music do you like" "erm, erm... techno... sorta..." "I don't like techno" "no that's trance your thinking of..." Which it usually is! Never mind IDM, most people don't really even know what techno is and it's been around long enough.
