To all lovers of IDM and electronic music:
The purpose of this message is to announce the creation of a new label,
Circumvent.
In the rush of American electronic music, and to a lesser extent the rest of
the world, there?s a frightening trend among consumers that is
beginning to aversely affect the entire underground music scene:
labelspotting.
So much energy these days goes into the branding of a label?s concept,
its appearance and packaging, its ethos and aura--often at the cost of
producing music that is consistent in quality and artist support. More and
more, the small labels that once existed to promote musicians at the start
of their careers have become navel-gazing sloths focused almost exclusively
on penetrating lists and developing cliquish mystique--all to generate buzz
about some sort of, as Peter Saville once put it, ?a public secret.? If you
own a record from X label, then you?re in on the gag of a lifetime.
No longer.
* You will not find a Circumvent website with loads of propaganda and
flash-filled graphics.
* You will not find a Circumvent singing eflyer built with Macromedia in
your inbox.
* You will not be sent a Circumvent label update in faux linux coding
with non-sequitur references to nonexistent political agendas in third-world
countries.
* You will not receive a Circumvent package of stickers, multi-colored press
sheets and laminated passes to a show in some NYC dive you couldn?t find
anyway.
* You will not receive a Circumvent limited edition seriograph of the label
owners? buttcheeks to covet for six months before selling on eBay for a
year?s worth of college tuition.
Instead, you will get music. Keep your eye out for new releases by Army of
the 23 Monkeys and Burning Rome.
