yall be makin me front and shi', man. kidding. "house music gets people laid". true, house music is nothing more than Dionysian glutiny. kind of like pop music. problem is, lots of house and trance and club scene people in general turn def ears to other music because they want the same old thing, what "keeps people going off". this may be a generalization. but i am talking about the mid-west here. i live in the mid-west, in a large city, but still, the only music that kids are told is out there in electronics is the dance stuff. so, since i listen to other types of electronics, i am assumedly a listener of house music. so i am assumedly a member of the drug culture. this may sound like another sad assumption, but here, thats what these kids who are getting the club culture "second hand" think you have to do;drugs. the record industry arnt helping much at all either (drugs, see other posts); if an artist tours, look were they go: west coast, chicago, east coast. we have examples from the recent posts from matador. so, the "heartland of america" only gets the "outside view" of electronic music. sucks, in turn making my life suck. answer would be to move, but that doesnt solve any problems or effect a change, does it? recently (last summer?) orbital came here with crystal method. i showed up to see orbital because they are god damned essential artists to everything new i listen to. out side, all these kids who show up to see crystal method are openly acting like dipshits; dealing and doing drugs right out on the side walk, "water dancing" or what ever its called to music that hasent started yet and harrasing the police who were just there to bust morons who do drugs in public. the show started with that group that did that vocal song that was on all the radio stations last summer, cant remeber their name....oh well. then came crystal method (gag, what a poiniant name for a band, real eye catcher, eh?) and they play just strait crap. they stop. 85% of the audience leaves. orbital is left to play for about 75 fans. i'm not saying that all dance music culture people are ignorant to other music, but in outside markets like mine, this is what happens. there is no awareness or respect made for anything that does more than "make the crowd go off".this is a cultural issue here. people get generalized and judged, happens, sucks. FACE IT. i dont want to be lumped into that group of people, do you? but i am! cant do much about it. yet..... here is an idea, why doesnt Public Radio play electronic or experimental or artistic music? the arts are supported by the government because they are seen as "culturally advancing", so why doesnt a Freight Elevator Quartet or a Richard Devine get some type of public recognition? because the mass public sees the over powering bad in all things rather than the good. and electronic music is lumped together with drug slash rave culture being the over powering bad. its perception, man. all about perception. i cant say what type of music i like to fellow workers. i say "electronic" they say " like dance stuff?". i say "just a odd type of music" they say "well, what type of instruments?" and i say "electronics" and they say "like dance stuff?". you see what i am getting at. we are inandated from day one with the vision of disco's when it comes to electronic music, for the most part. ((((another side note, k-rad are awsome. they make some house music, but really smart, almost humorious house music. so, there is the house music i find worth-while)))) f-dood, i like to dance and laugh at me making an ass of myself, and god knows that once you get the beer goggles on and you stare out a chick infested dance floor, house music sounds real good. but, that isnt what i want my public community to judge me as. yeahyeahyeah, "dont care about what people judge you as". bullshit. you havent worked in the realworld long enough. one day i will move north, seize Montana and open it as a Euptopian society free of bias, but for now, i got to make this popular society thing work. i want some god damned, un-associated respect for truely heady music, not a fucking pity look for liking "computer music". strait up. benine "my escalator stops for oktobeerfest"(yahhoooooo) _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. I think this might have been the first time I've been called a "dipshit" and felt honored. Perhaps these kids were just having a good time ... I hate to think that their pleasure somehow lessened yours. Jazz used to be the domain of hash men. Is it now? Dancing used to be equated with sexual promiscuity. Is it now? The scourge of "house" and the unintelligent assumptions that follow it too, will pass. J PS - Actually, the Freight Elevator Quartet seem to have increased their visibility quite a bit lately - URB, AP (I think) - soon they will unsub from the list due to our inability to enjoy discussing the music we love. Perhaps we should get it over with and insult them now ; ) "You should dream more, Mr. Wormold.
