I just got back to Canada from London, where I saw the warp lighthouse party, and tons of other stuff. First off I'll say that I'm quite dissapointed that people have been so uptight about the whole thing. I came from the west coast of north america and using money that's worth about as much as toilet paper and I wouldn't bitch about the party. There were problems, and some of the music was shit, but if you like warp/skam/schematic etc. then you SHOULD have enjoyed yourself. Plus, I think that a lot of the complaints about the show came from those who didn't show up early and had to wait in a huge line. I was one of the first through because I showed up about 45mins to an hour early. I got a beer with no lineup and only waited for about 3 minutes to get food... If you got in early enough there was certainly room to wander around and go between buildings. Now, I tried to wade through the sea of negative replies from the warp party, and got pretty far... But I noticed that noone mentioned Richard Devine's set. It was certainly the best thing of the night! So clean, and complex... A lot of it was new I think. Really awesome stuff. He was playing with 3 laptops! Although it was a 'laptop set' he actually looked like he was doing something. If you were expecting something different than the classic devine, you would've been dissapointed. But it was certainly more advanced and interesting than his previous work... I know there has been so much talk of the party so far so I'll be breif and try and mention only things that haven't been yet... Did anyone else find the kalidascope footage of people skiing funny? If you don't know what I'm talking about, it was part of BOC's video. I liked some of it, including the simple themes, dated editing effects and old documentary footage stuff. Plaid surprised me. Not much of a fan normally, but I will buy their new stuff now. The set was a little long, and I noticed before they played the last song there was a guy who looked like he was running things telling them to cut it. They ignored him and he didn't look impressed. Autechre didn't blow me away, but it was my favorite, second to devine. Bogdan sucked! Probably because I was kinda worn out and didn't apreciate slightly chopped d'n'b loops from a sample cd with annoying frequencies at 4 am or whatever it was... Watching some guy hit play on a laptop and hop around onstage is not my idea of "awesome" "brilliant" or worthy of "best of the night". Also, Bjork was backstage. I saw her dancing to Kraftwerk's "Numbers" while it was playing. anyways, thanks from reading. Just wanted to throw my two cents in, however late it has come... -Matt- www.konstruktiv.net "There is absolutely no inevitability as long as there is a willingness to contemplate what is happening." -Marshall McLuhan --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
