Sorry to waste the bandwidth of a music discussion list but I know many of you have permanent internet connections so this applies to you. I recently discovered 3 viruses on my computer that propagate themselves via the network and email messages. These viruses somehow managed to get past both Zone Alarm's Internet Security Utility and Norton Antivirus 2000. I spent most of the night last night researching these viruses and found out how to remove them as well assure that they don't return. At least one of the viruses is known to open a "back door" to the host computer allowing the remote computer full access. By using a program called Wintop I discovered a program called DNETC.EXE running at 96% of my computer's memory that didn't show up at the CTRL-ALT-DEL prompt! If anyone is interested in more information about the viruses I found please read information related to what the virus is, what it does and how to remove it. I highly recommend reading the *entire* document as the writer has posted several different versions of a patch without using different file names - so if you want the latest version you must read about them.
Information about the 1st virus can be found here:
http://www.distributed.net/trojans.html.en
Information about how to remove it is here:
http://n0cgi.distributed.net/cgi/dnet-finger.cgi?user=bovine
The files created would be found in your c:\windows\system directory. They are named:
MSxxx.EXE ~22016 bytes (size and filename varies slightly)
MSCLIENT.EXE 4096 bytes
INFO.DLL (text file log of other infected computers)
DNETC.EXE 186188 bytes (official release v2.8010-463-CTR-00071214)
DNETC.INI (containing the email address bymer@inec.kiev.ua or bymer@ukrpost.net)
In addition the 2nd and 3rd virus I found were the Kakworm A and B viruses (which Antivirus also failed to find)
Info as well as a patch can be found here:
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/wscript.kakworm.fix.html
and here:
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/kak.worm.b.removal.html
sorry for the bandwidth but I had quite a scare last night and wouldn't wish the same on anyone else.....
p.s. - I succesfully managed to rid my computer of all three of these viruses but it was a bit tricky - if any of you discover this virus on your computer and need help please contact me and although I'm not a licensed tech support rep and will claim no responsiblity for what may happen to your computer I will still be glad to help :-)
