I also have tons of debt, and only the most paltry of jobs. And I'm trying to get gear so I can make some decent music. Far from suggesting that everyone can/should come out to Coachella or the few other far-flung events, I just was trying to point out that when Jeff said it was "absolutely" out of the question he wasn't exactly correct. And I failed to do that properly since I was emailing much further into the night than should be legal. A few lucky souls were able to finagle their way over. Of course, it should be much easier than that to see such influential artists as Autechre and mu-ziq, and on at least an every-other-year basis. Lots of places that don't have anything IDM related ought to, especially big cities with colleges such as Dallas. If only we had the same problems ska had a few years ago, where you had to choose between which band from down the street to go listen to this weekend! I'd say that you should start trying to promote stuff in your area, but since you're making your own music and doing what you can, that pat response wouldn't apply to you at all. And I know how hard it is to get an IDM-related night going even when there is a base for it, I've been trying hard to here in my town for a year or so now. I can see how my response might have sounded like "well, if you didn't come it's just that you're not a loyal enough IDM fan" or some bullshit like that, but that's not what I meant at all. I'm also not one to bellyache at all about not having good music around where I live, 'cause I know I'm friggin' lucky, even if I do have to drive 70 miles into and out of Hollywood every time I want to see something decent. You've never seen a car accumulate miles so quickly. Probably I just shouldn't respond to emails after 4 am like I did to that one, I can't quite tell what sort of tone I'm conveying, and I definitely didn't mean to ruffle any feathers or poke at any sore spots. The guy I met there said that he was on the IDM list, so I was sort of hoping that he'd realize I was talking about him and say "hey", since I've completely lost his email, name, etc. in spite of the fact that he and his girlfriend seemed really cool. Basically I feel like saying a big, resounding "D'OH! That's not what I meant at all!" Ryan p.s. To give this a little more general content, does anyone know why there's never an IDM tent at raves? Is it because it's usually just not economically feasible to put in another sound system, or is it because there's not enough djs to pull from in most places? Good hip-hoppy IDM could easily take the place of the ambient rooms that seem to have utterly disappeared.... Or are most successful IDM events usually associated with coffee houses and bars that already have equipment and a clientele, with the event just bringing in extra cash for the establishment on top of whatever they've already got? I seriously want to know more about the economics of successful events, I'm desperately trying to get stuff going where I live. Thanks for any info on this! ------------- Hi. My name is Andrew. I have a day job. I have massive amounts of debt, and records I'd like to put out. Scuse me if I can't drop everything to go to Coachella. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Everybody complains too much - when I was young we had to drive to Denton, TX to watch anything close to that IDM stuff - the Brickhaus Cafe place with that smelly Proem guy, no less! No Lackluster for us. And then our eyeballs burnt out. : ) J "You should dream more, Mr. Wormold.
