I've always been a big fan of Orbital, but I'll tell you one thing that really annoyed me. Forget the whole MTV vs. underground thing. The pure fact that they recorded a track with overlaying vocals from Leonardo DiCaprio just made my stomach turn. I really wish they had thought harder before coming out with The Beach. Hopefully the forthcoming album will help redeem themselves. TekDz9er <If there's one thing that annoys me, it's those people who hate Orbital simply because they've appeared on MTV. That's how the anti-Orbital argument always starts -- mention MTV first, as if some sort of commercial profile is indicative of a lack of artistic integrity, *THEN* get around to criticising their music (albeit in a unconvincing fashion). If Orbital ain't your cup of tea, then that's fine -- but don't pretend to hate them just because they're not as "underground" as other IDM artists you like.> --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Oribital are commercial pop electronica anyway.... Only "In Sides" was a really great album from them - anything else was just useless crap. Please note that I did not see them on MTV (I simply don't have such option in my country).I do not like them because they are making music for masses not for themselves in the first place.... Though in "In Sides" they've shown what they're really capable of... And then decided to switch to normal money making music. Alas, they lost it and never seem to find it until now. Certainly it is only my humble opinion...no offense Alien -----Original Message----- From: TekDz9ER@aol.com [mailto:TekDz9ER@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, October 11, 2000 7:40 PM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: [idm] Re: Chart/MTV Success = Shite Music I've always been a big fan of Orbital, but I'll tell you one thing that really annoyed me. I've found that most people I know really enjoy the brown album, Snivilization and In Sides. After that, it was all the same. No progression in sound design. It's kind of annoying when you can look at IDM posterboys like RDJ or the Ae lads and hear some serious changes in style. These Hartnolls seem to have sat on the same sample banks for quite a few years. Although I heard from someone, somewhere that their new album is in 5.1 surround sound. That might be interesting... oh, c'mon. If you haven't heard the brown album, you probably shouldn't be talking about orbital as a band who make 'useless crap'. This pegs you as a late-comer with quite a limited understanding of their work. If you've heard the brown album or "belfast" and still want to believe this, fine... IMO, In Sides pales in comparison to the brown album. Halcyon + On + On is one of the greatest pieces ever written. Ever. ---brian ------------------------ Brian W. Listen, I've heard these CDs listed below made by orbital from colection of my friend and the only one really worth checking is "In Sides". Am I really quite limited in understading of their work? btw. the trackname Halcyon sounds familiar to me - it is on one of the albums I've heard - maybe in some remix form.... It means that I wasn't impressed with it eather. sorry no love for obital coming from here. no way. pop crap. ok I didn't hear that brown stuff and I hope you're right that it is good but frankly speaking after "Middle of Nowhere" I decided to forget about Orbital...muzak...brrrr. The Green album and Snivilisation have always remained my favourites. I did like the Brown album, but the tempo seemed to remain consistent all the way through. (I'm not saying they *didn't* subtly shift the tempo about between tracks but it just sounds like the same tempo all the way through.) Not enough variety for my liking, although I still dig it when I'm in the right mood. The Green album and Snivilisation both have a much broader, dynamic range of material on them. I loved the Green album for its relative freshness at the time and Snivilisation for shifting the goal posts. In Sides and The Middle of Nowhere are both good fun. Both full of *good* tracks but not really any *amazing* ones. I first heard all the Middle of Nowhere stuff during their Brixton Academy gig (with Plaid in support -- woohoo!) last year. Absolutely amazing live. For me, TMON is practically a souvenir of that gig, so it's hard for me not to listen to it outside that context. -- Mark Stevens http://www.headspin.clara.net/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The brown album (Orbital 2) is nearly as good as "In Sides" and "Remind" from the Brown album is one of the best songs I've ever heard. Go get it. Orbital is probably the most 'musically' talented of all Idm artists. And too much "Musicality" on this list is usually met with negativity. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Konstantin Minko" <ibss@ukrpack.net> To: <idm@hyperreal.org>; "Paul Peterson" <paul@bartoli.org> Sent: Thursday, October 12, 2000 2:41 AM Subject: [idm] RE: Orbital = Shite Music
