I made a vague enquiry earlier on IDM, but I'll lay it out more explicitly and see if I get some responses. I love Kit Clayton's track on the Plug Research compilation 'Voices in My Lunchbox'. Some guy singing in a half-assed, notes-begone manner with some reasonably opaque lyrics and a typical Kit Clayton backdrop. Likewise, I really like the track 'Code' by Panamerican, which has the singers from Low harmonising away on top of a minimal, dub-influenced track. The vague conclusion I'm coming to is that what I like about "indie" vocal styles fits with what I like about more minimal downbeat electronic music, and am itching to hear more. Anyone have any suggestions? TIA, Michael np. Hmm, you could try Unkle's "Psyence Fiction" album, which came out a few years back on Mo Wax. I don't know if you could describe it as minimal, but it's certainly downbeat and electronic. They made the mistake of hyping it up a bit too much ("indie meets trip-hop!", "James Lavelle is God!"), so the popular press gave it a bit of a kicking, but there's some pretty decent stuff on there -- especially if you liked DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing". Anyway, you'll find the likes of Thom Yorke, Richard Ashcroft and Badly Drawn Boy providing vocals on some of the tracks. Plus Ian Brown on the "Be There" single (worth getting hold of the UK edition, because it also has the video for "Rabbit in Your Headlights" and a pretty decent Noel Gallagher remix of "The Knock"). Are you after either male or female vocalists specifically? I tend to prefer the female voice, in which case you might like to check out the Cocteau Twins' "Four Calendar Cafe", which other than "Victorialand" is perhaps the most ambient, chilled-out album they've done. Definitely more synths than guitars. Be careful though -- once you've bought one CT album, you'll want to buy them all. Tori Amos' "From the Choirgirl Hotel" may surprise a people too. Lots of dark, swirling atmospherics and dirty beats on quite a few of the tracks. Quite trip-hoppy in places. Check out the track "Cruel" here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000062S6/o/qid=971221216/sr=8-3/026-9419909-0179642 Other bits and pieces, albeit leaning towards the more spacious... *nitpick* the vocals on code are just mimi sparhawk, of low. sorry. stellar track - my fav on the album. i also like the "1986 summer fire" track from the boards of canada warp10 show. it's track 6 for those of you without tracklistings. almost all vocals, although they're backwards and stretched but very very very nice. cheers, /derek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

***don't have any suggestions, michael, but just a bit of info on the kit clayton track you speak of. the man providing the vocals is mike donovan, the chap who runs (and records on both solo and with o.s.t.) ( )dial records in california. the vocal tracks on clayton's ~scape ep/lp also feature donovan and were all recorded around the same time (he went with the one for PR and then used the others for ~scape). andrew duke :) Michael Upton wrote:
