I think folks are going to like the new Aphelion full length on defocus...
very lush, analog-sounding IDM, old-school without being reductively retro.
Deep chords, lovely pads, crisp percussion tracks. Imagine, say, John
Beltran teamed up with Plaid - sans the more eclectic elements of the
latter. A deceptively simple album, it's easy to miss on the first listen,
but wraps itself insidiously around you on subsequent plays. DeFocus
definitely continues to put out some great stuff - getting better all the
time, if you ask me.
Interestingly, the new Duplex 12" on Clone is an even *more* retro slice of
classic intelligent techno. They've gotten away from the Rotterdam techno
thing, and are making what sounds almost like a Motor City tribute record -
but again, not cheesily. I put it on alongside the Yoni 12" from 1994 and
they worked perfectly together. Very good stuff, and welcome listening.
