snd: stdio (mille plateaux [mp092]). (quoted from www.mille-plateaux.com) ________________________________________________________________________ One of 99's electronic top acts is back with the second album. It was recorded in Sheffield during spring 2000 and edited during July. The second work of MAT STEEL and MARK FELL for MILLE PLATEAUX develops the aesthetic and conceptual anatomy of the first project. 'Makesnd cassette' was a prior example of interface design in music and was voted on Ars Electronica as one of the albums of the year. SND focuses on virtuality, machinism and digitality by giving an introduction into the minimalism of th 21th century, a tool for the next millenium. The new work is both more traditional and at the same time more abstract than the first, aiming to reach further in each direction than before. In doing so it highlights features from both the early US techno scene and contemporary digital musics. Here, each tradition is used as a template, through which snd trace lines of mutual opposition. In reducing musical components to a minimum, snd aim to address that which exists in the margin between the listenable and the unlistenable. In this respect, their music articulates a dislike of the artistic environment they have inherited and resists the inward pull of the genre within which they are often placed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ anyone know when this is coming out...or if it.s out yet? lander;. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Please, Is it any more "yawn" than the majority of IDM released? Their newtables and travellog 12"ches are quite enjoyable, really a lot more submerged pads/melodies than MAKESNDCASSETTE. I really enjoy the second BLIR 12" as well, but the first is quite dry, almost sahko-esque in terms of non-movement/development, but blippier. It's a collab with shirt trax (well, as much of a collaboration as that is) and is all minimal real-time noodlings. So how does the new SND stack up against their other releases? I know I've begged before, but does anybody have a copy of the FIRST SND 12? Probably willing to pay a reasonable amount for this piece. later Andrew -| Andrew Schrock | aschrock@cs.brandeis.edu |- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
