Christ. I've been hearing people yelp and whine about
community since the post-hey day of Operation Ivy.
The idea that "scene" and "community" should go
together is an old, silly and, at least in my mind, a
discredited idea.
I remember (back in the day) when Kathleen Hannah (in
her Bikini Kill days) used to get on stage, late, and
announce to the crowd, which would be chanting some
variant on the "get on the stage and play" tip, that
she was not their fucking waitress. I.e., it was not
her job to serve the crowd.
What does this have to do with IDM? Well, first of
all, any complaints that are being expressed here as
being specific to IDM should be expanded to include
pretty much ALL "avant garde" or "cutting edge"
musical subcultures...
IDM is difficult music and it attracts difficult
people. The same could be said for some sorts of
hardcore or you know, whatever.
I've found that Ska crowds are exceedingly friendly,
but uh, I still hate ska.
If you're going to stay away from a show because the
artist isn't kissing your ass enough, you shouldn't go
the show. However, the bottom line: It's not their
job to make you happy...
