I went out to see Oval here in Ottawa. Granted, Ottawa is a lame place to see stuff; Scanner played to maybe a dozen or two people and Merzbow lost money. So, I wasn't surprised that there was no one there. Maybe 20 people. Empty club. Popp got on stage like 3 hours late (everyone waited outside). He played his set and the sound was too rumbly and all the texture was kinda lost, though the music was interesting for a while. Then it dragged on a bit and I started losing interest. He finished, and left a loop running and just closed up his powerbook and packed his equipment while the sound was still going off the mixer. He just ignored everyone (who sat quietly watching what he was doing) and just packed his stuff. When the sound shut off because he unplugged the last piece of gear everyone clapped appreciatively for a while, but he acknowledged no one. People then approached him and tried to tell him his set was good, but he ignored them as if they weren't there (even though they were talking to him from 1 meter away). He then walked past everyone, right by them, not even acknowledging that they had waited patiently and wanted to talk to him, and went outside with his gear back to his hotel. His manager (or the label guy or whomever) was at least gracious and said 'bye guys have a good night' to everyone. On principle, I recommend you don't go, so Popp doesn't get any money. :) I mean, so the show was badly organised in a shitty club and no one came. You think he could at least make an effort to be nice to the people who came out, paid their hard earned cash, waited out in the cold and bought CDs and came to tell him he was good and maybe ask a question or to. AT LEAST he could have said something. If he was mad, he could have at least said "Sorry guys, I can't really talk right now" or something, but no, NOTHING. As if we weren't even there. So, unless your mum died 5 minutes before the show, FUCK YOU MARKUS POPP... I would have driven to see you in Montreal, but this is the last time I give any of my time and money to a rude prick who doesn't respect his audience enough to even acknowledge their presence when they talk to him directly; paying him a complement no less. At least Robin Rimbaud was cordial enough to thank the 15-25 people who came out for showing up and didn't take out his disappointment on the fans that did make it. How was the music? Uh, not bad, but the whole thing left such a bitter taste in my mouth, I don't even care. Luckily the Ryoji Ikeda show I saw three days ago more than made up for this...

I saw Oval on the tour when he opened for tortoise, both bands disappointed me (i won't go into tortoise, i'm not a fan) I hadn't listened to any Oval when i went and was expecting a lot from what i read. He set up a table on the edge of the stage plugged a large monitor into his laptop (to play solitaire on a big screen for all i know) and pointed and clicked his way through the most boring set i had ever seen. The music was tepid at best (i've since heard better on his releases but that night it was terrible). The most motion i saw was when he sniffed and he had to scratch his nose. It was as if there wasn't a performance at all, just an impedance to conversation. You could probably lie and say there was some minimalist performance value, or his being a lifeless asshole was a selling point, but it just really turned me off to his music. I still haven't bought anything, and only listen with reluctance to this day. (this is no attack on laptop performers, i've seen it done fairly well even in memphis).

Yeah, I had the same experience in Cleveland. I tried to tell him he did a nice set. And he ignored me. He was a complete ass. I lost a lot of respect for him and his music. I hate that "Rock star" attitude. If it weren't for ppl like us, he wouldn't sell any records. I'm done with Oval! I thoght the opening band was really cool though, at least they were friendly afterwords. --AL

i saw oval's lecture at the cultural center here in chicago last friday and then caught his set at the empty bottle on saturday. i thought it both were excellent. from a software design standpoint, his ovalprocess software (running in the skotodesk installation) is an excellent piece of object oriented design even if his lofty goals of software-kiosk as high art are more than a bit quixotic. he did a question and answer session after the lecture and i got the impression that he is not a very warm and outgoing person. this has absolutely nothing at all to do with his artistic merit. some people don't like to talk to gushing fanboys after they finish their set at 2AM -- which actually feels like 7AM to Germans abroad in the USA, I might add... you try staying up 8 hours past your bedtime doing shows every night and see how chipper and talkative you're feeling after a day or two. later josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

one trick pony // visionary tom-ay-to // tom-ah-to you could say the same thing about mark rothko, steve reich or any other artist who works at developing a personal style rather than trying to go for a "flavor of the month" sound like Autechre my take on popp is that he is a very intelligent artist with a distinct goal in mind, who has developed a process for achieving this goal which he then executes both in the studio and in live settings. he does not do this "for the fans" and i think it's rather selfish for fans of the music to feel that they are owed face-time with the artist just because they came to the show. keep in mind that the stereotype of "computer geeks" being anti-social exists primarily because it's true in 90% of the cases. human interaction does not come easily to many of us. social unease is very easily misconstrued as pomposity. -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Wed, 20 Sep 2000, Arnold Layne wrote:

Not to defend someone for pulling what in most contexts would be a complete twat maneuver (and really, few things piss me off more than absolute refusal to acknowledge existence... in a good number of African countries, this is the official highest insult you can pay--even in the simple instance of walking by without saying hello--because you're treating someone as if they're on the same level as an animal or a stone... I've quietly ranted at, and ultimately (inentionally, finally, visibly) offended a prominent German professor for doing exactly this when I asked her for the time of day at a library) but.... This actually falls pretty well in line with Popp's philosophy on the denial and/or demythologizing of authorship, i.e. it may be that Popp's over-intellectualized motive behind being a half-existent droid is to reduce the appearance of authorial presence. Now, why he would go and play live if that's his goal is anybody's guess.... I can't believe that revenues from his handful of stateside fans would even pay for travel costs. Quite possibly he's just reinforcing an overwrought aesthetic of detachment at this point. I can't verify whether audience disregard is standard routine for him-- I didn't see anyone try to chat him up when he opened up for Jim O'Rourke, although he certainly didn't shout out to the crowd at any point :)-- but at any rate, I'll still be at his live show at the next opportunity, if only because I think his schtick works well when the sound is keyed up right.... There are a number of reasons I refuse to try to talk to any given artist on the basis of a show they've done; not wanting to end up hating a personality that is only peripherally related to the music they're creating is one of them. Or did anyone forget that AFX is an overweening, pre-pubescent ass? I do get occasional urges to chat up Chan Marshall, though... even if the last time I talked to her she thought I was making fun of her. Sweet kid, that one. Cheers, M. ok. but then to some people this could show a lack of creativity or a fear of evolving, perhaps because of "being on a winner" or losing out on fans/sales/money/credibilty. although i doubt that applies to oval. not having heard his works, i am not entitled to judge. how very quaint. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
