well, from what i've heard of the 30 second sample of "kid for today" that they had on their website (and have mysteriously taken down.. heh heh), it sounds similar to their older material, but perhaps less melancholic and more thoughtful...? the dreamy sample from the warp flyer for the release is also from "kid for today", so if nothing else, they're "lusher" than before. i'm sure that it's definitely going to sound like a BOC release. the only other thing that boards of canada has experimented with is using voices for melody, such as the two very nice vocal-oriented (in a boc way) tracks from their warp is 10 party bootleg (the unreleased ones, #2 and #3). but both still sounded very "boc'ish". i think it will be pleasantly different from their past material, but nostalgically similar ;) and i'm sure the new ae will be even more derivative from their past material (yay!) cheers, /derek ----------- "Extremism is no vice when God's on your side" -Opus the Penguin --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The tracks from the Peel Session they did a year ago are in the same vein as EP7, but perhaps even more complex. They also seem to develop a little more. The tracks I've heard start a certain way and usually get transformed into something else by the end. Kid for Today is a track that they must have had kicking around for a while. A stereolab mix of it appears on the warp 10 year anniversary compilation. My guesses are: BOC will probably just develop slightly what they've done previously. Ae, I hope, will start to explore the room for expression within the new sonic ground that they opened up on EP7. I got the feeling that the EP had a rather high gee whizz factor, and was somewhat lighter on depth of feeling than earlier releases. If they can reconcile this sort of digital headache with their long term knack for tunes, the results could be breathtaking. Either that or they'll go folk-rock. d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Their tracks from Mask 5 and Warp10 live set made me think they would move towards vocoder / electro stuff, but created in a sort of 'modern' way. It seems that their EP won't sound like this, but I hope they won't completely give up this direction. ae has never done anything but go completely elsewhere again & again & again. everyone knows that. it was a topic for discussion ages ago, & now everyone knows damn well that ae comes up with some fresh new shit every time. as far as boc using different sounds, did you somehow fool yourself into believing that all of their tracks have the same sounds? i think the reason their tracks have different titles & lengths is that the tracks are different ;) & whoever said boc's remixes are mediocre oughtta get their mouth washed out with soap =] their remix for bubbah's tum is your GOD & you know it. their remix meat beat kills. their remixes for midnight star & colonel abrams are SATANIC!!! what the hell were you thinking when you said that? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I was referring to the Peel Sessions show they played on 8/99, not the 12" that came out last year. This stuff is definitely not "Tri Repetae" era material. It's very much post "EP7" material. Someone (EggyToast I think) already pointed this out. Andrei
